Dorsey ready for action

Steve King, Staff Writer

11.26.2008

The season-ending finger injury suffered by Brady Quinn means the Browns have not only a new starting quarterback in Derek Anderson, but a new second-stringer as well in Ken Dorsey.

Dorsey, a sixth-year pro, hasn't played in a game this season and in just one contest (in 2006) in his three seasons with the Browns. He had been the team's No. 3, or emergency quarterback for the first 11 games this season.

Now he is one play away from being thrust into the game as the Browns get ready to play the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

"You're definitely closer to playing when you're the No. 2 guy, so you've got to always be ready to play and do your part," Dorsey said before practice on Wednesday. "In this league, you never know what's going to happen."

Dorsey is no stranger to NFL action. Prior to coming to Cleveland, he played three years with the San Francisco 49ers with 10 starts, seven of which came in 2004 when he threw for six touchdowns with nine interceptions with a 54.4 completion percentage.

"You want to be out there playing," Dorsey said. "I don't think you can be in this league if you don't want to be playing. We're all competitors. We all want to play, and we all want to win."

Along with Dorsey moving up the ladder, wide receiver/kick returner Joshua Cribbs now takes over at No. 3 at the position. He was an outstanding multi-faceted quarterback at Kent State from 2001 to '04, throwing for over 1,000 yards in three of four seasons while passing for 55 touchdowns and running for 38.

He's thrown one pass in his three years with the Browns, an incompletion in 2006, but admits he is itching to try some more throws.
