Benedictine meets Cardinal Mooney in HS GOTW

The Division IV, Region 11 Regional Final between Benedictine and Cardinal Mooney will be featured as this week’s Cleveland Browns High School Game of the Week, presented by PNC Bank.

Benedictine is 9-3 on the year, and advanced to the Division IV Regional final by beating Chagrin Falls in the semifinals, 52-35, and Woodridge in the quarterfinals, 28-0. The Bengals are led by head coach Joseph Schaefer, who is in his first year coaching at Benedictine.

Cardinal Mooney is 8-4 on the year, and advanced to the Division IV Regional final by beating Struthers in the semifinals, 42-14, and Cleveland John Hay in the quarterfinals, 45-20. The Cardinals are led by head coach P.J. Fecko, who has been the head coach at Cardinal Mooney since 2000.

The last time Benedictine was in the state playoffs was back in 2011 when it lost to Lake Catholic, 47-21. Previous to that, the Bengals earned the 2004 State championship with a 27-14 win over St. Mary’s Memorial. Benedictine’s overall playoff record is 35-9.

This year marks Cardinal Mooney’s 26th postseason appearance. Cardinal Mooney’s last postseason game came in 2011 when it became the Division III State champion by beating Lima Shawnee, 21-14. Cardinal Mooney’s overall playoff record is 58-16.

The winner will advance to the Division IV State semifinal to play either Steubenville or Gnadenhutten Indian Valley.
