Browns 13, Bears 10

Posted Sep 2, 2010

Phil Dawson gave the Browns a 13-10 win over the Bears with a 36-yard field goal as time expired.

When the Browns needed to make a couple plays on defense and special teams, defensive lineman Brian Sanford and defensive back DeAngelo Smith answered the bell in a big way.

In the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, the Bears faced third-and-ten from the Browns’ 39 yard line. Sanford blitzed off right tackle and brought back-up quarterback Dan LeFevour for a seven-yard loss. On the next play, Smith blocked Brad Maynard’s punt.

The Browns took over the on their 48-yard line and seven plays later, Phil Dawson booted a 36-yard field goal to give the Browns a 13-10 win over the Bears.

The Browns and Bears traded punts and field position in the third quarter and the score remains tied at 10 heading into the fourth quarter of the preseason finale at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

The Browns took a lead with 3:29 remaining in the second quarter but it did not last long as the Bears marched right down the field on a response drive that was punctuated by Robbie Gould’s 46-yard field goal with 1:08 left in the half.

The Bears responded to the Browns taking a 10-7 lead on Phil Dawson’s 25-yard field goal through the uprights in the East end zone. Dawson’s kick capped an 11-play, 69-yard drive that took 6:48 off the game clock.

Defensive back Ray Ventrone came up with a pass break-up on fourth-and-one to keep the Browns and Bears tied at 7 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams’ first scores were set up by mistakes by the other squad.

The Browns tied the game after forcing a turnover deep in Chicago’s territory. On third-and-17 from the Bears’ 21-yard line, quarterback Todd Collins looked to signal a timeout, but the snap came and bounced off his facemask. Browns linebacker Jason Trusnik recovered the loose ball at Chicago’s 13-yard line.

In his first game as a Brown, rookie running back Montario Hardesty gained all 13 yards on the drive and scored from one-yard away. Dawson’s extra point evened the score.

On the Browns’ first offensive drive of the game, Colt McCoy was behind center Shawn Lauvao, but never got the snap in his hands. The Bears recovered the football inside the red zone.

The first play of the ensuing drive was a handoff to Chester Taylor and the veteran running back gained two yards. Then, Collins, who got the start in place of Jay Cutler, completed a two-yard pass to Devin Aromashodu, before the Bears found tight end Greg Olsen for the 15-yard score.
