Browns-Bengals Week 10 & 15 Preview

Posted Apr 22, 2014

A look at the biggest storylines in the Bengals-Browns matchup

Cincinnati Bengals

Additions: QB Jason Campbell, OT Marshall Newhouse, SS Danieal Manning

Subtractions: WR Andrew Hawkins, FB Chris Pressley, OT Anthony Collins, DE Michael Johnson, DB Brandon Ghee

Biggest storyline: Will the Bengals keep their three-season playoff streak intact without both of their coordinators? Jay Gruden and Mike Zimmer were deservedly hired as head coaches by the Redskins and Vikings respectively. Cincinnati tried to keep continuity by promoting Hue Jackson and Paul Guenther as in-house replacements. Regardless, that is a great deal changeover.

Biggest storyline part II: The conundrum of Andy Dalton. The quarterback has increased his touchdowns in each of his three seasons in the NFL – up to 33 last year. But his interception numbers have trended upwards each year too, boiling at 20 last year. Against the Browns in 2013, Dalton threw three picks and his quarterback rating was 60.0. Add in the fact that his playoff record is 0-3, and some around the league are wondering if Dalton is the long term solution.

Biggest storyline part III: Who is the best receiver in the AFC North? Last season it was a tossup between Josh Gordon and the Bengals’ A.J. Green. Gordon bested Green in yards (1,646 to 1,426) but Green hauled in more receptions and touchdowns. It was the Browns who got the last laugh on Green in 2013 though, limiting him to nine catches for just 58 yards and zero touchdowns in two games. Regardless of their statistics, arguably two of the NFL’s top five receivers reside in the AFC North.
