Browns sign Maynard

The Browns signed punter Brad Maynard and placed Richmond McGee on injured reserve, the team announced Tuesday evening.

The Cleveland Browns today signed punter Brad Maynard, the team announced. In addition, the club placed punter Richmond McGee on injured reserve.

Originally drafted by the New York Giants in the third round (95th overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft, Maynard has appeared in 223 career regular season contests. He played with the Giants from 1997-2000, before joining the Chicago Bears, where he played through last season. Maynard has 1,258 career punts for 52,739 yards with a gross average of 41.9, a net average of 36.5 and has placed 407 punts inside the 20 yard line. In 2008, he led the league with 40 punts inside the 20. Maynard has registered a net average of 37.0 or better in seven of his last 10 seasons, including a 38.7 mark in 2004 and a 38.1 average in 2008.  Last year, he punted 83 times for 3,326 yards with a gross average of 40.1, a net average of 35.2 and 24 inside the 20. He spent training camp this season with the Houston Texans before being released on September 3.

A four-year starter at Ball State University (1993-96), Maynard set school records for most career punts (242) and punt yards (10,702). He finished his career ranked third in NCAA history among punters with at least 200 attempts with a 44.2-yard gross average. A native of Tipton, Ind., the 6-1, 188-pound Maynard attended Sheridan (Ind.) High School.
