The Browns traded up to select Richardson with the third overall pick of the draft. He started 15 of his 38 career games at the University of Alabama (2009-11) and totaled 3,130 career rushing yards on 540 attempts (5.8 avg.) with 35 rushing touchdowns. He added 68 receptions for 730 yards and seven scores and returned 28 kickoffs for 720 yards (25.7 avg.) with one touchdown. Despite playing just three seasons, Richardson ranks among the Crimson Tide career leaders in rushing yards per attempt (second), 100-yard rushing performances (second), rushing touchdowns (third) and rushing yards (fifth). In his final season, he set Alabama single-season records for rushing yards (1,679), rushing touchdowns (21) and all-purpose yards (2,083), while tying a school-best with 144 points and 24 total touchdowns.
Selected with the 22nd overall pick, Weeden started the final 26 games of his 30-game career at Oklahoma State University (2008-11). He completed 767 of 1,103 career passes for 9,260 yards and 75 touchdowns. His yardage and passing touchdown totals were both school records. As a senior, Weeden finished second in the nation with 4,727 passing yards, while completing 409 of 565 passes with 37 touchdowns. Prior to enrolling at Oklahoma State, Weeden was a second-round draft choice by the New York Yankees in 2002. As a pitcher, he spent five seasons in the minor leagues.
