Browns speak about life

Colt McCoy, Reggie Hodges and Benjamin Watson spoke about their lives and paths to the NFL at Grace Church on Monday evening.

On Monday, Dec. 3, almost 2,000 people gathered at Grace Church to hear from quarterback Colt McCoy, punter Reggie Hodges and tight end Ben Watson.

The three Browns players were part of the panel for the Church’s annual Go Deep program. The program offers an inside look at life on and off the field for pro football players. This is the eighth year for the program, and the crowds grow every year.

“It’s a way to be able to give back to the community,” stated Tom Gimper, the Director of Sports Ministries at Grace Church. “They talk about life, in and out of football. People hear the guys’ stories about their life and what they have gone through to get where they are. It helps encourage them.”

Before the program, those in attendance received a tailgate meal and an autograph session. There the three panelists were joined by offensive lineman Shawn Lauvao, linebacker James-Michael Johnson and defensive backs Eric Hagg, Johnson Bademosi, Trevin Wade, and Usama Young, who came out to support their teammates.

During the hour-long program, kids were encouraged to sit on stage in the ‘Dawg Pound’ as the players answered questions about sports, family and faith that were put forth by those in attendance. Questions ranged from their favorite football memory, who influenced them the most and how they keep their faith while playing in the NFL.

The event gave people an insight into the lives of pro football players who share a common thread of faith.

“I don’t have to hate the person across from me to play football,” Watson explained to the crowd.

This annual event is always a huge hit with the Church.

“We advertise it to our parishioners, who then go out and share it with their friends and family,” explained Pastor Gregg Carrick.
