Cribbs hosts Shop with a Jock

Posted Dec 14, 2011

Browns wide receiver Joshua Cribbs held a “Shop with a Jock” event Monday evening in Strongsville.

On the football field, wide receiver Joshua Cribbs is known for his electrifying kick returns and touchdown receptions. Off the field, Cribbs spends his time giving back to a Cleveland community which has supported him since his days as a quarterback at Kent State University.

Cribbs continued that legacy of giving back on Monday evening when he hosted 50 children from the Cleveland Christian Home in Strongsville for his annual “Shop with a Jock” event.

After enjoying dinner from SUBWAY® Restaurants, the children -- who were accompanied by Browns players around the store -- went on a $100 shopping spree.

“Previously, we had Shop with a Jock with Willie McGinest and after he left, I picked it up,” Cribbs said. “I thought it was a very great initiative. The whole thought of it was great. He had been doing it for so long and helping the kids out. When he left, I didn’t want the kids to go unhelped or not have a good Christmas because a player was not here, so we continued it when he left.”

While the children enjoyed the event, Cribbs also took a lot from the experience.

“It gives me purpose, other than being a professional athlete,” Cribbs said. “This is our duty. It gives us a purpose, a drive and everything. Just to be able to do something like this, it’s more than enough for me at Christmas, being able to give to them. Letting them see professional athletes, and not only see professional athletes, but to shop with us and get gifts at the same time, that’s like a double positive around Christmastime.”

The Cleveland Christian Home is a place for homeless, neglected and abused children from the Cleveland area.

In addition to Cribbs, the children were given the opportunity to shop with defensive backs Mike Adams, Usama Young, T.J. Ward, Joe Haden and Ray Ventrone, wide receivers Jordan Norwood, Mohamed Massaquoi, Greg Little, Carlton Mitchell and Rod Windsor.

Tight end Alex Smith, defensive linemen Scott Paxson, Auston English and Jayme Mitchell and linebackers Benjamin Jacobs, Quinton Spears and Titus Brown also joined Cribbs in shopping at the event.

“I think it’s very important to touch kids’ lives because you don’t know what they’ve been through,” Adams said. “You don’t know how they’ve grown up and you might make that one difference in their life and they just might want to become inspired and just do something very huge and make a change in the world. It’s great for them to see us.

Adams added, “It’s a beautiful thing, just seeing them smile. At the end of the day, it’s about the kids and it’s a good thing.”
