The Cleveland Browns are extremely fortunate to have thousands of fans that are passionate about the team and will go the extra mile to support an organization that means so much to them.
Many of these same fans also exert that passion in supporting their community, or causes and initiatives that mean a great deal to them personally.
As we see each year, Browns Backer clubs around the world lend their hands, money, and time to various community organizations in hopes to help make a positive difference.
This is definitely an understatement for Scott Lacy and the Bougouni Browns Backers.
With the help and generous support from hundreds of incredible Browns fans and Backer clubs, the Bougouni Browns Backers built a three-classroom school in rural Mali (West Africa) during the 2002 season through the sale of customized club t-shirts. The school was built in one of the poorest countries of the world, and 100 percent of the proceeds went straight to its needed creation.
The club is happy to report that the "Cleveland Browns" school, as the kids refer to it, is thriving and has become an integral part of the community, pulling in students from nearby villages as well as serving as an adult learning center for reading and math skills. Even local government officials have used the facility and they now use the school as the local polling place for national elections.
Five years later, our Browns are making great progress, and the Bougouni Browns Backers are launching an exciting new project! The Club is working with African Sky, an all-volunteer organization devoted to building friendship and understanding between the people of Mali and the United States, to build "Ten Schools for 2010"!
The Club is well on its way to realizing this new vision for West Africa and once again would like to offer their new Bougouni Browns Backers t-shirts in hopes of building another "Cleveland Browns School" in Mali.
