Hoyer to start against Bears

CHICAGO -- Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer will start in place of Jason Campbell in tonight’s preseason finale against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.

CHICAGO -- The Cleveland Browns will start Brian Hoyer at quarterback in tonight’s preseason finale against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.

On Wednesday, coach Rob Chudzinski announced the Browns would rest most of their starters, except for offensive lineman Oniel Cousins, defensive end Billy Winn, outside linebacker Quentin Groves and wide receivers Josh Gordon and Travis Benjamin. Jason Campbell was slated to start at quarterback, and is available despite flu-like symptoms.

Hoyer has played in 15 NFL games, with one start in four years with the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals. He has completed 57 of 96 attempts for 616 yards and two touchdowns against three interceptions. He has a career quarterback rating of 72.2.

In addition to Winn and Groves on the defensive side the football, the Browns will start Ishmaa’ily Kitchen at nose tackle, John Hughes at left defensive end, Justin Cole at outside linebacker, Tank Carder and L.J. Fort at the inside linebacker spots, Akeem Auguste at right cornerback, Leon McFadden at left quarterback, Johnson Bademosi at free safety and Josh Aubrey at strong safety.

Offensively, Rashad Butler (left tackle), Caylin Hauptmann (left guard), Jarrod Shaw (center), Martin Wallace (right tackle), Kellen Davis (tight end), Brandon Jackson (running back) and Brad Smelley (fullback) will start against the Bears.
