Hughes, Gordon expected to start

Defensive lineman John Hughes and wide receiver Josh Gordon are expected to start for the Browns in today’s game against the San Diego Chargers.

Rookies John Hughes, Josh Gordon and James-Michael Johnson are expected to start today’s game against the San Diego Chargers at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Hughes will start at defensive tackle for Ahtyba Rubin, while Gordon is expected to play for veteran wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi. Johnson is expected to start at strong side linebacker for Scott Fujita, whom the team placed on injured reserve Saturday evening.

Hughes started in place of Rubin at defensive tackle in the 34-24 win over the Cincinnati Bengals two weeks ago. He has registered 16 total tackles, nine solo stops and one sack this season.

Gordon leads the Browns with 333 yards and four touchdowns on 14 receptions. He has started four games this season.

Johnson will make his third straight start after missing the first four games of the year with an injury to his ribs/oblique area.

Rubin (calf) was declared “out” for the game on Friday’s injury report. The team also deactivated defensive backs Dimitri Patterson (ankle) and Tashaun Gipson (knee), running back Brandon Jackson, fullback Owen Marecic and offensive lineman Jarrod Shaw. Like Rubin, Patterson was declared “out” on Friday.

The Chargers deactivated wide receiver/kick returner Eddie Royal, strong safety Brandon Taylor, cornerback Shareece Wright, running back Curtis Brinkley, inside linebacker Jonas Mouton, defensive tackle Antonio Garay and tight end Ladarius Green.

Mouton (hip) and Royal (hamstring) did not practice Friday and were “questionable” on the injury report. Wright was a full participant in practice despite a foot injury.
