After the first four weeks of the 2011 NFL regular season, Browns quarterback ![]()
McCoy has completed 100 of 172 attempts with six touchdowns against three interceptions through four games. He has an overall quarterback rating of 78.7 after the Browns fell 31-13 to the Tennessee Titans last Sunday.
“I would be the first to tell you that there are a lot of things that you can work on, improve on, but I think it’s a process,” McCoy said. “The guys in here are working really hard. I’m working really hard. I know our coaches are working really hard to really kind of get where we want to be. As for the game, we lost, so it’s hard to evaluate your play because that’s the only thing that’s on your mind. We’ve just got to re-group, stay together and keep fighting.”
In the loss to the Titans, McCoy completed 40 of 61 attempts for 350 yards and one touchdown against an interception. His attempts, completions and yards were all career highs. The 40 completions broke the old record of 36 set by Tim Couch on Sept. 22, 2002 at the Titans and the 61 attempts bested Brian Sipe’s previous team high of 57 against the San Diego Chargers on Sept. 7, 1981.
While McCoy was able to complete 65.6 percent of his attempts against the Titans, he endured nine quarterback hits and three sacks for 11 lost yards.
“I think you worry about any quarterback that gets hit,” Browns coach Pat Shurmur said. “We’re concerned about it; we focus on it and try to eliminate it. Let’s hope in our tenure here that I never have to call 61 passes again because that’s not the way to play the game, in my opinion, because that’s obviously the way things went, but we don’t want that. We’ve played some defenses that can put pressure on the quarterback. Of course, that’s part of it and the other part of it is just us, what we have to do to get the ball out quicker, protect better and generally execute more efficiently.”
McCoy has earned the respect of his teammates by staying in the pocket against the on-coming rushes of their opponents.
“He’s a really tough kid,” said left tackle ![]()
McCoy will have a bit of time to recover from the hits he took against the Titans. The Browns are on their bye Sunday and return to the field for a game on Oct. 16 at the Oakland Raiders.
“Going into the bye week, we have a chance to make our season or let something slip by again,” McCoy said. “We are going to get out of here and kind of rest and fuel up and re-group and just get ready for Oakland and I think that’s all we can do. Nobody’s heads are down, we got beat and we didn’t play like we wanted to. We got down early and you’ve just got to put it behind you. The sun’s out today, it’s a good day and you just keep working.”
