McCoy will get his chance

Posted Sep 1, 2010

With quarterbacks Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace not scheduled to play Thursday night against the Bears, Colt McCoy will get extended snaps for the first time in the preseason.

Tuesday morning’s announcement that quarterbacks Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace will not play in Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Chicago Bears gives rookie Colt McCoy and fourth-year player Brett Ratliff the reigns of the Browns’ offense -- at least for one game.

Through three preseason games, McCoy has completed 15-of-26 passes for 101 yards with two interceptions. Ratliff is 8-of-19 for 61 yards with one interception.

For McCoy, a third-round pick out of the University of Texas, where he became the NCAA’s all-time leader in games won, Thursday is an opportunity to show his skills one more time before the regular season gets underway.

“Improvement, that’s the mentality that I have every day before I go to practice,” McCoy said of his goal for Thursday. “Make sure that I’m working on something that’s going to make me better today than I was yesterday. That’s all you can ask for yourself, the goals that you set. Obviously I’ve got really high expectations for myself, so do a lot of people on this team, my coaches. I’d like to go out there and play the best I can and get something going offensively that we can put on tape and be proud of.”

While he has struggled at times during training camp and the preseason, McCoy has learned from his mistakes. Part of that learning process has been aided by the veterans surrounding him.

“Colt has shown growth, I think he was 10 for 14 last game,” said coach Eric Mangini. “I think there were a couple decisions, again, that he needs to improve on, but he improved on the decision-making from the earlier games. We are not where we need to be, but it has been better than what it was. That’s going to keep coming with time and experience.”

“It’s definitely a blessing to be able to talk to a lot of people, a lot of guys who have played, a lot of guys who are still playing,” McCoy said. “Just in this locker room itself, to have guys like Jake and Seneca who they have both played multiple years, there’s a big support group around me that I’m very thankful for. When you’re out there, you need to go score some points and lead your team.”

Even though it can be difficult to let go of mistakes, McCoy tries to keep everything in perspective.

“It is still football, it is still a lot of fun,” he said. “You are constantly learning, you are constantly getting a feel, you are throwing with different guys, you are playing with different people than you have played with. You just have to keep your head up, keep working and keep moving on and really study.

“I think studying in the game is one of the biggest things for me whether it’s watching our film or it’s watching film from last year or watching other quarterbacks,” McCoy concluded. “Just understanding how this game is played, it’s a lot faster and you just have to be prepared for all sorts of different things. At the end of the day, you can’t lose the fact that it is still football and its still fun.”
