Player Quotes - 12/16

Postgame quotes from Browns players following Sunday's 38-21 loss to the Washington Redskins.

(On the loss)- “They hit us with a few big plays like the boot [leg], play action, and stuff.  We lost to the team though.  We are going to come in tomorrow and watch the film, correct the mistakes, and get ready for Denver.”

(On practicing for the play action plays)- “We knew it was there, but everybody has to do their job.  We are going to get it done, come in tomorrow, watch some film, and get back at it.”

(On the tough last home game)- “It was a tough loss, but it happens.  It’s not easy to win in the NFL, all we can do is learn from it and move on.”

(On why the play action plays were so successful)- “It was a heavy run fake and it can get you. If it gets you, it can get you big.  So, we just have to work on it more.”

(On getting caught out of position)- “It happens but we just have to correct it.  They took what we gave them and it’s as simple as that.  So, we have to go out there and correct our mistakes.”

(On the defender failing to react on his touchdown)- “I’m pretty sure it was a busted coverage because as I got on him he just seemed like he was jogging like a run (play), so I ran right past him.”

(On the second half offense)- “We just came up kind of short in the second half.  We went weren’t executing like we were in the first half so everything went downhill.”

(On no offensive rhythm after halftime)- “We just have to take care of the moment.  If you go out there and cause turnovers, or turnovers happen on us, the whole momentum turns to their side.”

(On playoff discussion)- “We weren’t really focused on the playoff part, we were just taking it game by game, trying to get in sync, and just finishing the season strong.”

(On if they had seen that much misdirection this season)- “No, but we’ve had a fair share of the zone-stretch. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before. We prepared well for it. You’ve got to give Kirk (Cousins) a lot of credit. He replaced RGIII (Robert Griffin III), he played good offense and he kept drives alive and obviously they scored a ton of points today.”

(On having a good streak going but losing the last home game of the year)- “It’s tough. You hate to lose. We had a streak going, but this is a resilient bunch. It’s one game. We go to Denver next week where I’m sure no one is going to give us a shot, but we’re going to come in ready to play and ready to win a game.”

(On if he relishes the role of playing spoiler with two games left against Denver and Pittsburgh)- “Yeah. We’ve got eight quarters to play, eight quarters to put our best work on film regardless of what the situation is moving forward. I’ve been in this position a ton of times. We know we can win games. Today was just not a good group effort from all phases. We’ll go to Denver ready to play and get a win.”

(On if he was surprised by the way this game went after the team played so well the past three weeks)- “It’s very surprising. The way we game planned for the whole week, we thought it was going to be a good outcome, but you’ve got games where some outrageous stuff happens. Today, we let ourselves down and we let the whole city of Cleveland down. Everybody, especially season ticket holders, I feel bad for them and I want to say as a man, I just want to come to them and apologize. This was the last home game. We were supposed to go out with a blast. It was a big ball game for us and we didn’t do what we were supposed to do.”

(On the team not being able to make the playoffs this year)- “Playoffs? I really never thought about it. I just tried to play one game at a time. Guys around here just have to realize we’ve got to stay together. We’ve got to stay together and be one and just finish the season out strong. You’ve got to take it one game at a time because you never know what can still happen. It doesn’t matter what goes on for the rest of the season, we’ve just got to play our ballgame.”

(On how rookie Kirk Cousins performed)- “Kirk played a good game. Their whole offense, their game plan was a good plan. It was something that tore us up. Not to say anything bad about my defense, but they did what they did and they won the ballgame. I tip my hat to Kirk. He played a good game.”

(On breaking Jim Brown’s team rookie touchdown record and what that means to him)- “It means a lot, but we still lost at the end of the day so it doesn’t mean anything, for real. In the long run, I’m going to sit back and think about it, but right now I have a 24-hour rule. I’m not down about the game, but I’m very upset about this game. It didn’t really mean as much without the ‘W’.”

(On defensive downfalls)- “They just figured out what we were doing and they made some plays.  They ran with it when they made plays.”

(On Washington’s bootleg plays)- “We knew they ran the boot, but not that good.  They did a good job of disguising it.  They set it up well.  It’s just something you have to go to film and figure out who has it.  I’m not sure if I had it, or if it’s a reaction thing.”

(On preparing for two quarterbacks)- “It’s still the same offensive stretch, what they were running.  That’s all they were doing in the first half; is running the stretch.  The boot was something that they ran.  It was the same offense.”

(On adjusting to Cousins)- “We ran the same defense.  We played our game.  They did a great job making plays.  They were just making plays.  They had a great disguise, they ran the stretch and they ran the play action also.”

(On defending the play action)- “You have to get them on the cut.  They were doing a really good job on the play action.  Their running game was pretty good and when you get the ‘backers sucked up, just running those quick dig routes are really hard to cover.”

(On Kirk Cousins)- “He’s a really good quarterback.  The only reason why he’s not playing is because RG3 is there.  I don’t want anybody to take anything from him.  He’s a very capable quarterback.  He can make all of the throws like we’ve seen today and he can control the offense.  The only reason why he’s not in is because they have a great quarterback in RG3 and he did his thing.  He stepped in, played really well, the receivers caught the ball really well and you can’t take anything from him.”

(On Cousins in play action)- “He did a really good job.  The play action pass.  He did a really good job running the whole offense.”

(On a rookie winning in first NFL start)- “You can tell when a quarterback can throw the ball you know he’s able to just control things and he did a really good job.  There’s nothing we can take from him.  He ran the offense like RG3 would run it.”
