QBs see offensive potential

Posted May 25, 2010

The Browns quarterbacks and other players have seen the potential of the offense during the Organized Team Activities.

Having options is never a bad thing.

Whether it is Jake Delhomme dropping back to find a receiver down the field, Seneca Wallace rolling out to extend a play should protection break down or Joshua Cribbs in the Wildcat formation, the Browns will have a lot of options at the quarterback position during the 2010 season.

Those options have been noticed by the players, especially Wallace.

“It could be deadly,” Wallace said of the Wildcat. “Obviously, we talked and joked about it in the room that he broke my rushing record. He’s a heck of a runner, a great athlete and he can make plays. Having both of us on the field could be a deadly weapon.

“We did some things, but it wasn’t a true Wildcat like you’ve seen in Miami and teams that do that all the time and know how to do it well,” he added. “I don’t think we really perfected it in Seattle and so, hopefully, we can bring it here and do some great things. You’ve got Josh Cribbs, so he can help out. When the plays come, I’m going to try to be at my best to make things happen.”

With their play, the quarterbacks have caught the attention of their teammates.

“With the right extra pieces that we got coming in this year, we can be pretty dangerous,” said Browns left tackle Joe Thomas. “We have gotten some key players at the skill positions on offense to improve our passing game. So, I think there are a lot of reasons to be positive and optimistic.”

“He’s great,” linebacker Scott Fujita said of Delhomme. “I’ve known Jake for a long time; I have nothing but respect for him. I think I’ve played him eight or nine times and I’ve lost to him almost every single time, so I like having him on my side. I’ve played with some great quarterbacks, but Jake is a great guy, great in the locker room and he’s also a heck of a competitor. I’m glad to be playing with him now.”

Delhomme’s teammates, particularly the wide receivers, have impressed the 12-year NFL veteran.

“They’re very smart, they know what they’re doing and they work hard,” Delhomme said. “You know it’s still very early, I don’t know any other way to put it. I’m a lot more worried about what I’m doing out there than what they’re doing right now.

“You’re getting your feet wet, but if you tell them to run through that wall, they will do it,” he added. “They do things the right way, they’re coached the right way, and it’s so far so good, very impressive.”

It is because he respects his teammates so much that Delhomme will not hide who he is or how much he loves the game of football.

“What you saw today is what you’re going to see tomorrow, the next day and forever,” Delhomme said. “I am who I am; I wear my heart on my sleeve. I’m not ashamed of that. I like to have fun and if we’re not out here having fun, what good is it. All that work you do inside, all those hours you spend inside lifting weights or watching guys lift weights, it’s a lot of fun.

“I think guys can read if you’re fake or not,” he concluded. “I’ve always felt I could pin-point whether somebody’s fake or not. I’m myself. I’m exuberant; I like to have fun. It doesn’t matter who it is, with all the quarterbacks, if they make a good play, I’m going to get fired up for them. We’re all in this together, just like on defense. You look at the schedule and we don’t play the Browns this year. If they make a good play, that’s only getting them better for the season.”
