Ray Farmer to be on 'same page' with Mike Pettine

Posted Feb 11, 2014

Senior Editor Vic Carucci says new Browns general manager Ray Farmer intends to work closely with coach Mike Pettine so that they will be unified in their efforts to acquire players.

GM Ray Farmer is excited for the opportunity to work Head Coach Mike Pettine.

Ray Farmer couldn’t have been any clearer in the message he wanted to deliver to Cleveland Browns fans Tuesday.

“Moving forward, I would like to tell everyone that the plan is focused on the connective part of it all, making sure Mike Pettine and I are completely on the same page,” he said on “Cleveland Browns Daily, Driven by Liberty Ford.”

Farmer spoke soon after Browns owner Jimmy Haslam introduced him as the team’s new general manager, replacing Michael Lombardi.

Farmer went right to the heart of what is necessary for the Browns to make the dramatic improvement they have been seeking to make for a long time: a seamless relationship between himself and the head coach when it comes to putting together the team.

Farmer, who had been the Browns’ assistant GM, will now be in charge of the club’s final 53-man roster. Pettine will decide which 47 players are active on game day, and who will start.

Between now and the beginning of the season, Farmer and Pettine will be analyzing prospects for the NFL draft, in which the Browns own 10 picks, and available players in free agency.

“My first priority is going to be to continue working with the coaches and the scouts for the combine,” Farmer said. “I want to make sure we are in lockstep in identifying these players, going through the interview processes, and understanding these guys.”

That means Farmer and the Browns’ player-personnel staff need to thoroughly understand the types of players Pettine and his assistant coaches need not only to succeed in their offensive and defensive schemes, but also to fit the brand of football they are looking for the team to play.

“Coach Pettine has constantly referenced (having) guys on this team that are going to ‘play like Browns,’” Farmer said. “And ‘playing like Browns’ (means) every player will be passionate. He’ll be tough, he’ll play relentless. He’ll be competitive, he’ll be instinctive, and he’ll produce.

“I think, as we work through finding those guys, you’ve got to identify guys that have those traits.”
