Saints-Browns Week 2 Preview

Posted Apr 22, 2014

A look at the biggest storylines in the Saints-Browns matchup

New Orleans Saints

Additions: CB Champ Bailey, FS Jairus Byrd

Subtractions: RB Darren Sproles, WR Lance Moore, OT Charles Brown, FS Malcolm Jenkins, SS Roman Harper

Biggest storyline: There is no such thing as completely shutting down Saints tight end Jimmy Graham. Last season he led the NFL with 16 touchdown receptions. Graham’s 19 catches of 20-yards or more bested receivers A.J. Green, Brandon Marshall and Dez Bryant. A big reason linebacker Karlos Dansby was brought in was for his coverage skills, which will be put to work week two.

Biggest storyline part II: The Saints’ secondary has a new and improved look, featuring a future Hall of Fame cornerback and one of the top safeties in the game. Champ Bailey will provide a stabilizing leadership voice on defense, while Jairus Byrd’s ballhawking skills will be felt immediately. The 27-year-old safety has 22 career interceptions in five seasons with the Bills. Remember, the Saints finished last season ranked fourth in the NFL in total defense.

Biggest storyline part III: The last time these two teams played in 2010, it was the Browns who prevailed 30-17 in New Orleans. Cleveland’s defense picked off Drew Brees four times, including two David Bowens interception returns for touchdowns. The Browns hold a 12-4 all-time advantage against the Saints.
