Posted Nov 30, 2012

The transcript of coach Pat Shurmur's Friday afternoon post-practice press conference.

Browns Head Coach Pat Shurmur Press Conference 11-30-12

(On Eric Hagg not being at practice today)- “He’s ill. He’s okay. He’ll be ready to go.”

(On Joshua Cribbs returning to today)- “Cribbs practiced today.”

(On if Cribbs returned kicks in practice today)- “Yeah, he did everything he needs to do to be ready to go Sunday.”

(On if he expects Cribbs to play Sunday)- “I expect him ready to go.”

(On players campaigning for Phil Dawson to make the Pro Bowl)- “I think he’s been a Pro Bowl quality kicker for a very long time. I’ve got a great deal of respect for who he is and what he is as a player. I’m really glad he kicks for us. I think all that type of stuff, all those accolades, he’s very deserving of that. I’m not going to sit here and campaign for him, but I do really appreciate what he does for our team.”

(On Dawson getting feedback from other kickers on the difficulty of kicking in Cleveland and if other coaches say the same thing to him)- “We talk at times about our players. I think people understand that when we put Phil out there, we’ve got a really good chance of making our kicks.”

(On if he wonders why Dawson hasn’t made a Pro Bowl yet)- “I hadn’t really thought about that. I just know he’s an outstanding player and I’m glad he’s with us.”

(On the Browns not scoring a lot of points in the past and if it’s fair that most people look solely at that statistic for Pro Bowl voting)- “We’re trying to score more for him. I don’t know. I don’t really put much thought into the voting for those things. I know I recognize him as an outstanding player. I know our players trust him a great deal, and that’s what’s important.”

(On if Tashaun Gipson is ready for a starting role Sunday and how he expects him to play)- “I anticipate when he’s in there he’s going to play well. He’s had a chance to play quite a bit here in the last few weeks. He’s done a really nice job. If his reps go up, I think he’ll play fine.”

(On Rolando McClain being suspended and if that has an impact on his game plan)- “No, it really doesn’t. That’s something that they’re dealing with. I really would have no comment on that. My understanding is that Omar Gaither will start in his place. I know Omar from my days in Philadelphia. He’s a fine player as well.”

(On the filming experience of the upcoming show on Travel Channel)- “They’ve done what they had to do to film it and put it together. I would say that the folks involved with it have been very good about making sure that it’s not a distraction for the preparation. I know there’s a lot of interesting things that happen on a day to day basis within an organization. I guess that’s what they’re going to talk about.”

(On if he was hesitant to grant behind the scenes access)- “I do believe in the privacy of some of the things that go on. My biggest concern during the year of course is if it’s a distraction to the preparation or if there’s some competitive advantage that we’re giving away to our opponents. I haven’t seen what’s going to be run on December 4, but I’m sure it will be very professional and very interesting for the people that watch it.”

(On if the show is a good chance to show Jimmy Haslam what goes on behind the scenes of their operation)- “Again, I think it’s something that will be interesting for people to see. Anytime there’s a behind the scenes look at anything that goes on, I’m sure it’s very interesting. Beyond that we’ll see.”
