The Cleveland Browns High School Game of the Week, presented by PNC Bank heads east tonight for a Premier Athletic Conference matchup between the Willoughby South Rebels and Madison Blue Streaks.
South enters the game with a 6-0 record and features one of the best running backs in the state in Kareem Hunt, who has rushed for nearly 1,500 yards through six weeks this year.
Madison (4-2) coach Tim Willis knows the key will be limiting Hunt’s production.
“We have to always know where he is at,” Willis said. “You are never going to completely shut down a back like that, so you just have to contain him.”
The Blue Streaks will have the advantage of playing on their home turf on Homecoming, which adds to the atmosphere of the game.
“You tell the kids that you play for these kinds of games,” Willis said. “Games like this bring out the best in both teams. That’s why we do this and that is what high school football is all about.”
For South coach Matt Duffy, playing quality opponents like Madison brings out the best in his Rebels.
“Something we are talking a lot about is just staying hungry,” Duffy said. “They are always very well-coached and very physical. Their toughness is always something we are concerned about.”
While South’s offense has been hitting on all cylinders, its defense is also coming in to its own as the season progresses.
“We’ve really made some great strides on the defensive side of the ball,” Duffy said. “It’s difficult when we’ve been what we’ve been offensively and then, try to get to that level on the other side of the ball, but we’ve fought hard to do it.”
The winner of tonight’s game will receive $4,000 for its football program through the Game of the Week program, and the winning coach as well as Game MVP will be honored during the Browns’ game against the San Diego Chargers on Oct. 28.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Madison.
