CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Browns defensive end Billy Winn will start for Ahtyba Rubin, who is out for the season opener against the Miami Dolphins because of a calf injury.

CLEVELAND -- Defensive end Billy Winn will start for the Cleveland Browns in place of Ahtyba Rubin in Sunday’s regular-season opener against the Miami Dolphins. Rubin is inactive because of a calf injury that forced him to miss Friday’s practice.

Winn started 10 games for the Browns as a rookie in 2012, and totaled 26 tackles, with 19 solo stops, one sack, an interception and two fumble recoveries.

“Billy is very versatile,” Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said Friday. “I’m completely confident and comfortable with him in there, as well as Kitch (Ishmaa’ily Kitchen) and Armonty (Bryant) if Rube isn’t available.”

In addition to Rubin, the Browns deactivated quarterback Brian Hoyer, tight end MarQueis Gray, and linebackers Paul Hazel and Barkevious Mingo, as well as offensive linemen Martin Wallace and Shawn Lauvao.

Mingo (bruised lung) and Lauvao (ankle) are out due to injuries.

The Browns will start veteran Oniel Cousins at right guard in place of Lauvao, and despite missing practice Friday, cornerback Buster Skrine is active for the opener.

The Dolphins will be without the services of quarterback Pat Devlin, cornerbacks Jamar Taylor and Will Davis, running back Mike Gillislee, linebacker Josh Kaddu, and guards Danny Watkins and Dallas Thomas.

Jared Odrick will start at defensive tackle.
