Week 7 thoughts and insights

Some guys who know -- or think they know -- break down Week 7 in Northeast Ohio high school football

Zac Jackson, ClevelandBrowns.com

Game of the Week: Aurora at West Geagua

Both teams are 4-2. Both teams are chasing Chagrin Falls in the CVC race and both teams are chasing Chagrin and others in the Region 9 playoff race. So there's plenty at stake here tonight as both teams try to score a key victory and build momentum. I get the feeling both are good enough to win a first-round playoff game if they're able to qualify.

Team of the Week: St. Ignatius

The Wildcats went into Massillon and absolutely steamrolled the Tigers. Now, Massillon is having some growing pains but that's still a statement victory and a sign that this talented Ignatius offense is rounding into form and will be more than ready for a brutal stretch run and potentially a playoff rematch with Glenville. Might Iggy and Glenville be the two best teams in the state?

Potential Upset of the Week: Tallmadge over Wadsworth

The Devils are 3-3 and need a win badly to get back in the playoff race. Division I Wadsworth, at 5-1, would provide the necessary computer points. Here's another little caveat, too. Wadsworth smashed Tallmadge last season as a pretty sizeable underdog, and I highly doubt the Devils have forgotten that one.

Mike Parris, OhioVarsity.com

Game of the Week: Walsh Jesuit (4-1) vs. Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary (5-1)

Last season SVSM handed Walsh their only loss of the regular season in a 10-7 defensive slugfest. Both teams appear to be equally strong this season, shaking off early season losses. Each are riding respective three-game winning streaks, so something has to give. With each team boasting stiff defenses and equally strong running attacks, don't be surprised to see another close, low-scoring battle.

Team of the Week: Mayfield

The Wildcats are starting to return to last year's form -especially on defense. Mayfield pitched their third consecutive shutout in week six, shutting the door on Garfield Heights 31-0. With two more very winnable games coming up before a big matchup with Nordonia in week nine, don't be surprised if the Wildcats add to that shutout total and remain atop the Region 5 computer rankings.

Potential Upset of the Week: Solon over Brunswick

Brunswick, with their pristine 6-0 record, are starting to creep into the statewide top 10s across the state. Despite losing plenty to graduation, the offense has been dazzling once again. Meanwhile, Solon appeared shaky early in the season but has since righted the ship, winning two straight and getting back into playoff contention with a 4-2 mark. In ultra-crowded Region 1, Solon needs this win to remain in the top 8. The Comets must rely on a strong defensive effort and will want to keep the scoring minimal, trying not to get into a situation where they must match scores with the Blue Devils.

Andre Knott, WTAM

Game of the Week: Walsh Jesuit at Akron St. Vincent St. Mary

Not to steal any thunder from Mike Parris, but my alma mater hosting this rivalry game is a big deal. And with everything that's at stake for both teams, it's a very big deal. It's hard to believe the Irish have won three straight in this series but that matters little. They probably need this win to get in the playoffs, and I think Walsh needs a little redemption after the Hoban game early in the year. I look for another slugfest, somewhere in the 13-10 or 16-14 range. And that might be generous.

Team of the Week: Akron Buchtel

It looks like the Griffs are back after they beat Akron North last week to get to 3-3 on the season. I'm not sure where it goes from here but Akron football as a whole is better when Buchtel is good and good for coach Ricky Powers and everybody involved in getting things back on the right track.

Potential Upset of the Week: Streetsboro over Mogadore

I'll stay south -- I guess more east than south -- to pick the Rockets to do what a lot of people don't, which is go into Mogadore and win. I think winning the PTC title means a lot to this team and they need this one to get in the playoffs, so it looks like a potential upset to me.

High school thoughts and insights: Week 6

Some guys who know -- or think they know -- break down this week's high school football games in Northeast Ohio

Zac Jackson, ClevelandBrowns.com

GAME OF THE WEEK: Padua at Lake Catholic. The Bruins are still my pick to win Region 5, and they came thisclose to beating Walsh Jesuit last week. They didn't, and they'll need to guard against a hangover this week as they take a long trip and try to take a big step towards winning the North Coast League against a Lake team that's better than its record indicates.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. The Royals laid a whippin' on league rival Wooster Triway last week and head into this week's PAC showdown with Tuslaw with both teams at 5-0. Tuslaw is fifth in the Division IV AP Poll and won't be a gracious host, but the Mustangs gave up 379 rushing yards to CVCA's John Pettigrew last year and will have to be much better to have a chance.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Canton McKinley over GlenOak. The

Eagles are 5-0, flying high and seem poised to score their first win over McKinley in a long, long time. But I'm sticking with the Pups, who lost to two talented teams in the first two weeks but are figuring things out and are going to be a very tough out the rest of the way.

Andre Knott, WTAM

GAME OF THE WEEK: Euclid at Mentor. It's a game that will likely decide the Lake Erie League title, and the loser will also have to deal with very much being on the playoff bubble. But it's also a game to watch because it's a great, traditional rivalry that often offers the unexpected in some very entertaining games.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Lakewood. The Rangers were winless headed into their game against an undefeated Garfield Heights team and came out with a 7-0 victory that shocked just about everybody. The thing I'm most anxious to see now is how a very talented Garfield Heights team bounces back this week in a road game against a Mayfield team that's been better than most thought.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Benedictine over St. Edward. It's usually a close, hard-fought game between crosstown rivals and this one should be no different. I give a slight nod to the Bengals because they may need this one to keep their playoff hopes alive on their killer schedule.

Mike Parris, OhioVarsity.com

GAME OF THE WEEK: Boardman vs. North Canton Hoover. The Boardman Spartans have been dominant thus far, albeit against sub-par competition. Hoover will be their first major test of the season and the Vikings have had the Spartans number in the recent past. This one could go a long way in determining the Federal League title.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Mentor. It's always refreshing to see a Northeast Ohio team get the upper hand in a matchup against a Southwest Ohio power. Mentor was able to do just that in beating Moeller. The resilient Cardinals have gotten through one of the most difficult early season schedules in the state with a better than .500 record.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Massilon over St. Ignatius. The Wildcats face a tough test on the road at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium against an improving Massilon team coming off an impressive win over Garfield. Ignatius had a cakewalk last week and the starters only played the first half. They must be able to pick up the intensity and guard against a letdown against a Tigers program hungry for a win over Ignatius.

Thoughts and insights: Week Four

Some guys who know - or at least think they know - offer their thoughts on the Northeast Ohio high school football scene...

Zac Jackson, Cleveland Browns.com

GAME OF THE WEEK: Louisville at Canal Fulton Northwest. It will be standing room only by 5:30 p.m. in Smilek Stadium for this battle of unbeatens. Louisville has three impressive wins, none moreso than last week's road domination of Akron Hoban, and is playing at a very high level. Northwest is big up front, well-coached and will be ready for a clash of the NBC's titans in the first week of league play.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Akron North. I have a feeling the Vikings' hot start will be cooled considerably by Tyson Gulley and Akron Garfield this Saturday afternoon, but in the meantime they can take a bow for being able to go into Stow and grind out an overtime victory. That's the kind of win that will keep North in contention for its ever playoff bid as the season progresses.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Olmsted Falls over Amherst. The Bulldogs are just 1-2 and going on the road to play a 3-0 Division I school. But those two losses were heartbreakers and last week's win over Mayfield may have given the Bulldogs enough confidence to pull the upset. They'll have to slow Brandon Kish, though, and that's easier said than done.

Mike Parris, OhioVarsity.com

Game of the Week: Columbus St. Francis Desales (3-0) vs. Cincinnati Anderson (3-0). This isn't a battle of Northeast Ohio by any means, but fans from everywhere in the state should pay attention to this battle of Division II juggernauts. Considered by nearly every poll as two of the top three D-II teams in Ohio, DeSales and Anderson should wage a battle that could be a preview of a late postseason matchup. Anderson, the reigning state champs, likely enter as the home favorites, but they will have their hands full with the Stallions' option attack and staunch defense led by D-I recruit DE Davon Custis.

Team of the Week: Cleveland Central Catholic. Ok, so they might not be a powerhouse by any means, but the Ironmen deserve some praise after their 18-13 win over Brooklyn. It might not be a landmark victory to some, but Central Catholic ran their record to 3-0 in a season for the first time in over a decade. The Ironmen have already equaled their win total of 2006 and 2007, when they finished those seasons at 3-7.

Potential Upset of the Week: Ursuline over Massillon. I might take some flack for this considering Ursuline is an elite program, but anytime a Division V team can beat a Division I team (especially one of such magnitude) I would consider it an upset. Massillon will have their hands full with Ursuline, who again is a viable contender to return to the state title game. The teams boast some outstanding individual talents on both sides, as the Tigers rely heavily on RB/DB Justin Turner (Michigan commit) while Ursuline will feature D-I prospects in RB Darrell Mason and WR/DB Dale Peterman. Massillon beat Ursuline 14-3 last season, so the Irish will be looking to return the favor.

Mike Conley, Cleveland.com/OhioHSSports.com

Game of the Week: Archbishop Hoban at St. Vincent-St. Mary

This is the biggest game of the year for both these parochial schools in Akron. Much like the always-hyped "Holy War" between St. Ignatius and St. Edward in Cleveland, the game is always a hard-fought affair. Both teams are coming off their first loss of the season. Hoban lost to Louisville, 28-3 and St. Vincent-St. Mary fell to Akron Garfield, 14-13. The Plain Dealer's Carl Matzelle produced a great video featuring Fighting Irish RB/LB Harvey Tuck IV. The senior talks about what the rivalry means to the school and community.

You can check it out here http://ohiohssports.com/news/article/1342556284. Look for the bragging rights to belong to Hoban in 2008.

Team of the Week: Mentor

The Cardinals bounced back from a rare regular season loss to Strongsville by defeating previously undefeated Solon, 26-24. Mentor sophomore running back Mike Korecz scored three times in the win. The Plain Dealer compiled a neat video package of the game that you can check out here http://highschoolsports.cleveland.com/game/news/152269/article/20059/

Potential Upset of the Week: Bedford over Euclid

Don't let Bedford's 1-2 record fool you, they possess a bevy of athletes on both sides of the ball. They've lost by a combined 10 points in both their defeats this season. Euclid, while impressive in their last two wins, showed they were vulnerable in their 37-7 loss to St. Edward. The Bearcats must contain the Panthers' Jeffvon Gill if they want to come away winners this weekend. Gill is a workhorse capable of breaking a big play every time he touches the football

On the air: Marion Local at Coldwater

OhioHSsports.com will be video streaming from Coldwater, Ohio this weekend as the Cavaliers host the defending Division V state champs Marion Local on Friday night. Due to OHSAA regulations, the game will audio streamed live, while a video archive will be made available at 10 p.m. that same night. You can check it out here http://ohiohssports.com/game/score/160364/

Nick Camino, WTAM

Game of the Week: Nordonia vs. Brunswick is definitely the top match up of the week. Both teams are undefeated at 3-0 on the season and this game definitely holds playoff implications. Knights first year head coach Al Huge has picked up the Nordonia program right where former head coaches Keith Boedicker and Jason Hall left off. The key for Nordonia will be to establish its great run game on the heels of stud running back John Hamilton. Hamilton's ability to find holes within a very experienced offensive line helps take pressure off of the Knights passing attack. Brunswick lost a lot of senior talent to graduation but have seemed to reload with talent on both sides of the ball. And, don't forget, it's very tough to beat the Blue Devils on their home turf, Judy Kirsch Field.

Team of the Week: Olmsted Falls. After losing two weeks in a row, the Bulldogs put everything together and defeated a very tough Mayfield team. The previous week Mayfield defeated Willoughby South, but Olmsted Falls was just too much for the Wildcats. This week the Bulldogs will face undefeated Amherst Steele (3-0), where a win would put them right in the heart of the Division II Region 5 OHSAA Playoff hunt.

Upset of the Week: Canton McKinley over Austintown-Fitch. Any other year this pick wouldn't seem like an upset, but this season it definitely would be a shocker if the Pups of McKinley can get by the Falcons in Youngstown. McKinley finally got their first victory of the year in Week 3 defeating the Lake Blue Streaks 24-17, but Austintown-Fitch is undefeated at 3-0 and are looking to make their first playoff appearance in Division I Region I since 2006. The Falcons are definitely a better team on paper, but that's why they play the games.

Andre Knott, WTAM

GAME OF THE WEEK: Mentor at St. Ignatius - They might make ‘em bigger than this one, but not much bigger. Mentor and Bart Tanski were able to pull away from the Wildcats last year, but Ignatius is looking to get on track and return the favor. Mentor has shifted its offensive focus and will look to grind it out, while Ignatius will rely on its talented QB and pack of talented pass-catchers to secure a win that could go a long way towards playing a first-round playoff game at home.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Shaw. Good for the Cardinals, who are off to a 3-0 start and looking legit while doing it. Some thought Cleveland Heights would end Shaw's run last week, but the Cardinals delivered a resounding victory and deserve our attention.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Tallmadge over Highland. Seats on the Highland bandwagon are filling up fast, and for good reason. The Hornets are loaded, very fast on defense and thinking bigger than they've probably ever thought. They have a great band, too. But Tallmadge won't go down easy on its home turf and if the Devils can find a way to spring Tyler Fortner, they might not go down at all.

Thoughts and insights: Week Three

Some guys who know - or at least think they know - offer their thoughts on the Northeast Ohio high school football scene.

Zac Jackson, ClevelandBrowns.com

GAME OF THE WEEK: Brunswick at Brecksville.

The Blue Devils just keep winning, even when you think their graduation losses will catch up with them. But their first road test of this season could be a tricky one, especially since the Bees are stinging (pardon the terrible pun) from their home loss to Glenoak last week. Brunswick has been scoring by the bunches and the Devils' defense will need to step up this week if they hope to get to 3-0.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Youngstown Mooney.

Yeah, they lost to Mentor in Week One. Yeah, they lost that dream class of guys who are already playing big-time college football. But this team is still huge and talented. They clobbered Covington (Ky.) Catholic last week and will clobber a lot of people with Ohio State recruit John Simon doubling as a nose tackle and tight end and a power running game most teams just can't match.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Akron Garfield over Akron St. Vincent - St. Mary.

Andre Knott might not like this pick, and it might not happen, but I'll be shocked if the Rams don't at least push the Irish well into the fourth quarter. Garfield junior Tyson Gulley is worth the price of admission and his freshman brother, Toneo, is learning on the job. The Irish are stacked, and this one should be a low-scoring, entertaining battle.

Andre Knott, WTAM

GAME OF THE WEEK: Green at Canton Glenoak.

I chose to go off the beaten path and pretty far down I-77 for this pick, but it should be a good one. The host Eagles are 2-0 and need all the wins they can get before starting the grind of the Federal League next week. Green is 1-1 after losing a wild Week One game to Uniontown Lake and new coach Tom Stacy could use a win like this to show his program is for real asa they head into a tougher than usual Suburban League slate.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: I wanted to pick Strongsville, and my hat certainly goes off to the Mustangs before beating Mentor last week. But I'll instead go with Revere, who got to 2-0 with a hard-fought victory over a North Royalton team not many thought the Minutemen could beat. If the wins keep coming in league play Revere could find itself back in the Division II playoffs for the first time in a long time.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Normandy at Massillon.

No, this Normandy team isn't as good as the one that beat Massillon at Byers Field last year. And yes, this Normandy team would have to play an incredible game to pull it off. But if you're ever going to bring your A-game, you bring it to the incredible atmosphere of Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. And because the Invaders have Jake Squirek, they at least have a chance.

Mike Parris, OhioVarsity.com

Game of the Week: Louisville (2-0) vs. Akron Hoban (2-0)

This is a huge matchup for Division II bragging rights. Louisville, the state runners-up in 2007, appear to have another title contending team this year after thumping North Canton Hoover last week 22-0. Meanwhile, all Hoban did was beat powerful Walsh Jesuit convincingly, 38-21. Louisville will likely have the best players on the field in QB Neal Seaman and WR/CB Bobby Swigert, but Hoban appears poised for a big year. Should be a good one.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Sherwood Fairview

Who? Yes, a small Division V school in Northwest Ohio is the team of the week. Why? Well, when you roll up 838 yards of total offense and your quarterback throws for a state-record 779 yards and seven touchdowns, you get recognized. Yes, that's not a misprint. Fairview defeated Woodmore 83-52 (combining for the most points in a high school game since 1923) and QB James Elchinger shattered the state record for passing yards. The funny part? He broke the record set by the player he backed up for two years, former Fairview quarterback and current Central Michigan signal caller Ryan Radcliff.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Olmsted Falls over Mayfield

Mayfield is undefeated, but they have been living dangerously. The Wildcats' two victories are by a combined nine points. Meanwhile, Olmsted Falls is winless and the perennial playoff contender is hungry for a win. They have played two tough opponents in Clyde and Toledo St. Francis and their two losses are by a combined nine points. The battle-tested Bulldogs might realize their playoff hopes are on the line in week three and a third straight loss could be devastating. Expect them to come out hungry against a Mayfield team that has been walking the tightrope thus far.

Nick Camino, WTAM.com

GAME OF THE WEEK: Solon vs. Mentor. Both teams are powerhouse public schools that will definitely be in the Division I Region I playoff picture at the end of the season. Mentor has defeated Solon four times in just the past two seasons, twice in the regular season and twice the Cardinals have eliminated the Comets from the playoff picture. This season the Comets do look better on paper, but Mentor QB Anthony Fracci and the Cardinals are a tough team to beat at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: St. Edward. Everyone questioned the Eagles after a close Week 1 victory over Strongsville, but now, after the Mustangs defeated Mentor last week, people have finally realized that the Eagles Week 1 victory was huge. This past week St. Edward dominated Euclid 37-7, a team many thought could go undefeated. Now, Euclid needs to bounce back, but St. Edward proved they are the real deal in 2008.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Padua over Huber Heights Wayne. The Bruins return 17 starters from one year ago and seem to be on a mission this season, but this week will take on a tough Southern Ohio Division I foe in the Warriors. Wayne is favored, especially in their opening of a new stadium this week at home, but look for Padua to stick around and pull off the "classic" Division II team over a bigger Division I team upset.

Mike Conley, Cleveland.com / OhioHSSports.com

Game of the Week: Louisville at Archbishop Hoban

What's not to like about this game? Both teams are 2-0. Both teams have a passionate fan base. The Leopards are the state runner-up in Division II. The Knights are coming off a big upset over Walsh Jesuit. Louisville is led by quarterback Neal Seaman. Seaman is a smart, athletic leader who always keeps his team in games. He's got a nice target on the outside in Brandon Mathie. They can score points in bunches. Hoban is a hard-hitting, well coached team that's expecting big things in 2008. You may have to fork over a few extra bucks to get in to watch this game live.

Team of the Week: Strongsville

The Mustangs pulled off the upset over Mentor, the same team that topped powerhouse Mooney in Week 1 of the season. Strongsville is balanced on both sides of the ball and excels in the trenches where their experience has proved big in the early part of the season. If Nate Freese's 51-yard last-second field goal that bounced off the base of the uprights against Ed's in Week 1 would have been just a hair longer, we would be talking about the Mustangs at 2-0 with two quality wins. Nonetheless, their win over Mentor speaks volumes and will do wonders for their confidence going forward.

Potential Upset of the Week: Padua over Huber Heights Wayne

Padua's experience and leadership will lead the Bruins to victory over Braxton Miller and the boys at Huber Heights Wayne this weekend in Cincinnati. The Warriors are riding high after their win over nationally-renowned East St. Louis, 20-12, last week. Padua will bring them back down to earth and squeak by the Warriors on their home turf.

On the air: Centerville at Archbishop Moeller

OhioHSsports.com will be video streaming from Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati this Saturday at 7 p.m. as the Fighting Crusaders battle the Elks. Dan Labbe and Eric Thacker have the call.

High School Football Thoughts: Week 2

Some guys who know - or at least think they know - offer their thoughts on this weekend's biggest high school football games around Northeast Ohio...

Zac Jackson, ClevelandBrowns.com

GAME OF THE WEEK: Louisville at North Canton Hoover

The Leopards rolled all the way to the Division II state final last year before getting rolled by Cincinnati Anderson. They bring back many of their skill players from that team and are capable of flying just high enough to make it back. Hoover is solid every year and brings back a nice core of its own. This is a backyard rivalry that's always close and this year should be no exception. If you're going, get there early. This promises to be a very hot ticket.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Willoughby South

The Rebels are back, and last week's upset of Columbus Watterson could be the type of win that sets the tone for a very big season. Quarterback Patrick Nicely, a Bowling Green commit, is the catalyst and will try to keep it going in another very big game this week as the Rebels play host to Mayfield. Dominique Darling was the star last week, running for 174 yards and 2 scores and getting another TD on a pass from Nicely. Darling's rushing scores brought South back from a 24-13 deficit.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Canton McKinley over Indianapolis Cathedral

The young Bulldogs are still, well, Pups. And coach Ron Johnson's team lost its opener last week to Solon, 24-10. But Solon is very strong on defense, and McKinley should feel a sense of urgency playing in front of a home crowd as part of the Herbstreit Series Saturday afternoon. Cathedral was a state champ two years ago and perennially sends players to big-time colleges and the NFL, but could find itself against a Pups team that's more dangerous than some think.

GAME OF THE WEEK: Normandy at Poland Seminary

How will the Invaders fare on the road for the first time this season? If they can duplicate their effort against Madison in Week 1, they should be alright. Normandy lost a lot of talent from last year's team that made an impressive push into the postseason. Now, relying on the speed, power and athleticism of junior Jake Squirek, the Invaders find themselves with a real test this weekend at Poland. The bulldogs defeated Hubbard, 24-14, last Thursday to kick off the regular season. Poland possesses a quick, strong and athletic team that should test the Invaders on both sides of the ball.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Walsh Jesuit

Nothing more than the final score needs to be said for the Warriors' 48-14 drubbing of 2007 state runner-up Licking Valley on Friday night in Newark. Quarterback Kyle Snyder was 4-of-6 through the air for 83 yards and 2 touchdowns. While those stats are solid, they pale in comparison to his efforts on the ground. Snyder ran the ball 19 times for 249 yards (19.2 yards per carry) and 2 touchdowns. Walsh Jesuit could be in line for a special season with the talent they have in place.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Dover over Avon Lake

The Shoremen have a tough test on the road this week as they travel to Dover to battle the Mighty Tornadoes. Head coach Dave Dlugosz and his crew had all they could handle last week against Maple Heights and will have to put together a better effort if they want to escape from Dover with a win. The Tornadoes were knocked off by a solid Canton South squad in Week 1, 26-17. Dover is out for revenge after losing to the Shoremen, 25-13, in Week 2 last season. This has upset written all over it.

GAME OF THE WEEK: Cincinnati St. Xavier (0-1) vs. Prattville, Ala. (0-0)

This is the marquee matchup in the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Football Series, matching up the reigning Ohio Division I state champs with the 2006 and 2007 Alabama 6A state champions. St. Xavier was ranked 18th in the country in the ESPNRISE national poll, but lost their season opener to crosstown rival Colerain, 13-8. The Bombers, playing without injured starting quarterback Luke Massa, found points hard to come by against the Cardinals and only managed two field goals. This will be Prattville's first contest of the season and will look to continue a run which has included back-to-back state titles. With St. Xavier countering Prattville's talent with D-I prospects in defensive end Pat Muldoon and linebacker Luke Keuchly, expect a hard hitting, low-scoring battle between these two juggernauts. The pressure is on for St. Xavier, who will try to rebound after last weekend's tough loss.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Cleveland Glenville

With all the preseason hype surrounding St. Ignatius, Glenville entered their week one matchup against the Wildcats as the underdog despite winning each of the previous three matchups. The Tarblooders, despite losing a wealth of Division I signees to graduation, didn't let the underdog status or their inexperience effect their play. With a Marvell Brooks last-second FG proving to be the difference, Glenville upset nationally-ranked St. Ignatius 20-17 in front of 10,000 fans at Parma Byers Field. Glenville assumes the role as the top team in Northeast Ohio with their impressive victory. The road doesn't get any easier for the Tarblooders, however, as they must take on Pennsylvania power Thomas Jefferson in Week Two action.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Clayton Northmont over St. Ignatius

Northmont got their season off on the right foot with a win over Mason. St. Ignatius stumbled in their first outing against Glenville and must now attempt to rebound against a formidable opponent. It was the first loss in a season opener for St. Ignatius since 1987...how will they respond? St. Ignatius must make a long trek south to what should be a hostile, amped-up environment. If the Wildcats get off to a slow start or suffer from travel lag, the Thunderbolts could smell blood and put St. Ignatius in a situation they haven't been in a long, long time: 0-2.

GAME OF THE WEEK: Akron Hoban at Walsh Jesuit

This matchup of Akron Catholic powers usually is a hard hitting contest that comes down to the wire. This is also a matchup that in years past would have these two schools playing later in the year when both teams have a better idea of who they are. This aspect may help out the Knights from Hoban who won an overtime thriller 27-26 over Akron Garfield last week, as Walsh beat up Licking Valley 48-14. Walsh hosting combined with its size advantage should be the difference in this battle.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Glenville

I realize that this is a pretty obvious answer, but when you think of the quality teams that Ted Ginn Sr. has placed on the field over the past 8 seasons have impressed all with speed, quickness, and size. But for this team to beat a quality St. Ignatius team on the first weekend of the season, due to the leg of Marvel Brooks could make this team to beat in Ohio. Ignatius will bounce back, but for any team preparing to face Glenville just add the name Brooks to the long list of names you must keep an eye on.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: Strongsville over Mentorr

Mentor will hit the road to face a Strongsville team that loss to St. Ed's 37 -36 after leading 21-0 in the first quarter. Mentor scored a huge win over Youngstown Cardinal Mooney in week one. I'm taking Strongsville as my surprise team this week as both clubs have new starting quarterbacks under the helm. And my guess here is that young Kellen Pagel of the Mustangs learned a ton in his team's week 1 loss and will get his get back this Thursday vs. Mentor.

Nick Camino, WTAM.com

GAME OF THE WEEK: While the St. Edward Eagles escaped by the skin of their teeth with a 37-36 victory in Week One over Strongsville, the Panthers destroyed a respectable, but injury ridden Lake Catholic team. I talked with St. Edward Coach Scott Niedzwieki this week about keys to the game, and his number once concern about the Panthers was big plays. Against Lake Catholic the Panthers enjoyed some big plays, and at the same time, the Eagles gave up big plays to the Mustangs. So that's my key as well. If St. Edward can contain the Panthers high-octane offense, it is anyone's game, but if the Eagles continue to give up big plays defensively, then it may be a rout by Euclid.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: My team of the week is Solon. Last week they defeated Canton McKinley 24-10 in a game that was not even that close. The Comets are looking to reach the playoffs for the 10th consecutive year in a row, and with the Mentor Cardinals waiting for Solon in Week 3, it was imperative for Jim McQuaide's team to get off to a good start on the season. Now, with a tune-up game against Massillon Jackson at home this week, the Comets will be rearing to go in Week 3 vs. Mentor.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE WEEK: My upset of the week is Lake Catholic over Benedictine. First off, there is no word that Bengals star running back Anthony Urbania will be back yet from a sprained ankle he suffered against Euclid during Week 1 of the season. So, that puts two evenly matched teams without their star tailbacks. The Cougars lost Randy Greenwood before the season even started with a broken leg. I think the Cougars have finally figured out what they need to do to avoid big plays and will upset Art Bortnick's Benedictine squad.

On the air: Cardinal Mooney vs. Covington Catholic

OhioHSsports.com will be video streaming from Canton Fawcett Stadium this Saturday at 5 p.m. as the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals will take on the Covington Catholic Colonels as part of the Kirk Herbstreit Challenge. Mike Conley and Zac Jackson have the call.
