Breaking down the Cleveland Browns’ preseason opponents
Here’s a closer look at how the Browns stack up against their four preseason opponents
August 7-10 – at Detroit Lions
Additions: WR Golden Tate, S James Ihedigbo
Subtractions: WR Nate Burleson, S Louis Delmas, OT Jason Fox
Key matchup: Joe Haden vs. Calvin Johnson. An argument can be made that both of these players are the best in the entire NFL at their respective positions.
August 18 – at Washington (Monday Night Football)
Additions: WR DeSean Jackson, S Ryan Clark, CB Tracy Porter, QB Colt McCoy, OG Shaun Lauvao, WR Andre Roberts
Subtractions: CB Josh Wilson
Key matchup: The Browns’ front-seven vs. Robert Griffin III. One of the NFL’s most electrifying quarterbacks will provide a good measuring stick for coach Mike Pettine’s hybrid 3-4 defense.
August 21-24 – St. Louis Rams
Additions: WR Kenny Britt
Subtractions: CB Cortland Finnegan, OG Shelley Smith, OG Chris Williams
Key matchup: Joe Thomas vs. Robert Quinn. Thomas has been to the Pro Bowl in all seven seasons he’s played. Quinn posted an incredible 19 sacks in 2013. In a game where the starters normally play a full half, this battle is definitely one to circle.
August 28 – Chicago Bears
Additions: DE Jared Allen, DE Lamarr Houston, WR Domenik Hixon
Subtractions: DE Julius Peppers, WR Devin Hester, S Major Wright, QB Josh McCown, CB Zack Bowman
Key matchup: Jordan Cameron vs. Lance Briggs. Cameron is emerging as one the elite tight ends in the league. While Briggs isn’t a spring chicken at 33 years old, he has always been as solid in coverage as any linebacker in the NFL.
