Biography

Adam Beard enters his third year with the Browns as the team’s director of high performance. Beard oversees all strength and conditioning efforts for the team, as well as the sports science and nutrition initiatives.

Before joining the Browns in 2015, Beard obtained a wealth of experience overseas working with many Olympic, world champion and professional sporting organizations. He most recently served as the head of physical performance for the Welsh Rugby Union from 2009-14 where he oversaw player performance plans from four professional Welsh Rugby franchises and several overseas franchise teams.

From 2012-13, he was also appointed the head of fitness for the British and Irish Lions rugby squad in which he partnered with Microsoft to develop an innovative monitoring technology that specialized in tracking player wellness and performance. He has also served on the board of the United Kingdom Strength & Conditioning Association as the director of quality assurance and was instrumental in the development of the current Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach accreditation, as well as designing the English Institute of Sport, Aspire Academy of Sports and Welsh Rugby Unions Physical Quality and Strength Diagnostics testing manuals.

Beard spent nine years as a strength and conditioning coach at the Western Australian Institute of Sport (2000-02), Fremantle Dockers FC (2000-02), Australian Institute of Sport (2002-03), English Institute of Sport (2003-05), Great Britain Athletics Team during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, and Aspire Academy of Sports Excellence (2005-09). Over that period, he was recognized internationally and received the Coach of the Year Awards from the National Strength & Conditioning Association in 2009 and the United Kingdom Strength & Conditioning Association in 2013.

Beard graduated with a master’s of sports science degree, biomechanics from Edith Cowan University in Joondalup, Western Australia, and is currently completing a PhD at the Université de Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland specializing in hypoxic exercise physiology.

A native of Sydney, Australia, he and his wife, Dearne, have two sons, Aston and Jenson.
