Biography

Blake Williams was named linebackers coach on Jan. 19, 2017 and has eight years of NFL coaching experience.

In Williams’ first season, he helped Joe Schobert become the first Browns linebacker named to the Pro Bowl in 16 years. Schobert tied for first in the NFL with 144 tackles, while Christian Kirksey tied for fourth in the league with 138. Schobert and Kirksey joined N.Y. Jets linebacker Demario Davis as the only players in the NFL to play every defensive snap for their team in 2017.

After ranking 31st in rushing defense in 2016, the Browns finished seventh last year. Cleveland recorded its best finish in rush defense since 1992 and held opponents to a 3.35 rushing average. That figure was the second-best by a Browns team in a season, second in the NFL in 2017 and fifth in the NFL since 2009.

Prior to the Browns, Williams worked at the NFL league office in 2016.

In 2015, Williams served as the defensive coordinator at Southeastern Louisiana University after working as defensive coordinator at William Jewell College for two seasons (2013-14).

In 2012, Williams coached linebackers and served as defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. From 2009-11, he was with the Saints, helping the team win Super Bowl XLIV. Prior to New Orleans, Williams served as linebackers coach and a strength and conditioning coach for Jacksonville in 2008 after getting his start as a coaching intern with Washington from 2006-07.

Williams graduated from Princeton University, where he was a four-year letterman as a defensive back.
