Biography

Jerod Kruse was named assistant defensive backs/safeties coach on Jan. 19, 2017. He has 17 years of coaching experience.

In his first season, the Browns defense made significant improvements in many categories. The Browns, who finished 31st in the NFL in both total defense and rushing defense in 2016, ranked 14th in total defense and seventh in rushing defense in 2017. Kruse worked specifically with the Browns safeties and helped develop first-round pick Jabrill Peppers.  

In 2016, Kruse served as the defensive coordinator for Lee’s Summit West (Mo.) High School after 15 years of coaching on the college level. In 2015, Kruse worked as the associate head coach and special teams coordinator at Southeastern Louisiana University. He also worked with defensive backs in his time with the Lions, helping the defense rank second in scoring in the Southland Conference.

Prior to Southeastern Louisiana, Kruse served as head coach at William Jewell College from 2010-14, when he was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2014, while overseeing the development of a school-record 11 all-conference selections. Kruse served as defensive coordinator in his first two seasons at William Jewell from 2008-09, before taking over as head coach while continuing to call defensive plays for three seasons until 2012.

Prior to William Jewell, he coached the secondary at Baker University in 2007 and at his alma mater of Emporia State from 2001-06. Kruse also worked with Browns defensive coordinator Gregg Williams as a guest coach in the summers from 2008-11 with the Saints and 2012-15 with the Rams.

Kruse earned his bachelor’s degree in social science and his master’s degree in physical education from Emporia State. He and his wife, Kristin, have a son, Cameron, and a daughter, Marin.
