Norv Turner was named the Browns’ Offensive Coordinator on January 17, 2013. His résumé includes 38 years of coaching experience, including 14 seasons as an NFL head coach where he won 114 regular season games. Most recently, he spent six seasons (2007-12) as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers.
Turner led the Chargers to a 59-43 (.578) regular season record, including a 25-11 (.694) record against division opponents. Under Turner’s guidance, San Diego won three AFC West division titles (2007-09), including an appearance in the 2007 AFC Championship game. Turner was named the USA Today’s Coach of the Year in 2009. In 2008 and 2011, Turner’s offenses produced a 4,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver, a feat which had only been accomplished one other time in Chargers history. In 2010, the Chargers led the NFL in total offense and total defense, while finishing second in points scored. Under Turner’s tutelage, quarterback Philip Rivers became just the fifth player in league history to pass for more than 4,500 yards in consecutive seasons (2010-11).
Turner served as head coach of the Washington Redskins from 1994-2000. He led the Redskins to four winning seasons and the 1999 NFC East title. He was also the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 2004-05, and had stints as offensive coordinator in San Francisco (2006), Miami (2002-03), San Diego (2001) and Dallas (1991-93).
Turner’s offensive system has produced the NFL’s leading rusher five times through three different players in Emmitt Smith (1991-93), Ricky Williams (2002) and LaDainian Tomlinson (2007).
While with Dallas, Turner helped the Cowboys win back-to-back Super Bowl titles following the 1992 and 1993 seasons. While there, he worked with three future NFL Hall of Famers in quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith and wide receiver Michael Irvin. In 1991, Smith and Irvin led the league in rushing and receiving yardage, respectively, marking the first time since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 that teammates led the league in both categories.
Turner broke into the NFL coaching ranks with the Los Angeles Rams, spending his first two seasons (1985-86) as wide receivers coach before serving as wide receiver and tight ends coach (1987-90). Under Turner’s guidance, wide receiver Henry Ellard recorded three consecutive 1,000 yard receiving seasons (1988-90), including an NFL-high 1,414 yards in 1988. In addition, wide receiver Flipper Anderson registered 1,000-yards seasons in 1989 and 1990. In 1990, Ellard finished second in the league with 1,294 receiving yards, while Anderson finished sixth with 1,097.
Prior to joining the Rams, Turner spent nine seasons (1976-84) at the University of Southern California in various capacities. He helped the Trojans capture four Rose Bowls and the 1978 National Championship.
A native of the Bay Area suburb of Martinez, California, Turner was a quarterback at the University of Oregon where he was a three-year letterman (1972-74). He landed his first coaching job as a graduate assistant at his alma mater in 1975.
Turner and his wife, Nancy, have two sons, Scott and Drew, and one daughter, Stephanie. Scott is currently the Browns wide receivers coach.
