Newsome was a first-round draft pick of the Browns in 1978. He was nicknamed the "Wizard of Oz". Newsome became an instant team leader when he joined the Browns in 1978. He retired as the NFL's all-time leader in receptions for tight ends, ranking fourth among all receivers. Newsome's career statistics include 662 receptions for 7,980 yards with 47 touchdowns. He recorded his career best of 89 catches in 1983 and then repeated the feat in 1984. Newsome caught at least one pass in 150 consecutive games. He was named to the All-Pro team in 1979 and '84 and was named to three Pro Bowls. Newsome holds the Browns record for career receptions and receiving yardage. He was born on March 16, 1956 in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
