To kick off the weekend, Browns Alumni and team representatives will celebrate and connect all levels of football in Northeast Ohio during a special Cleveland Browns High School Game of the Week, featuring St. Ignatius and Mentor High Schools on Friday, Sept. 6. Cleveland Browns High School Game of the Week is presented by Ohio Cat in association with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM).

In this week’s matchup, perennial power Mentor Cardinals will host 11x State Champions of St. Ignatius Wildcats. Both teams are coming off of week one victories. Mentor defeated defending state champion St. Edward 29-28 in what was one of the biggest opening weekend games in Northeast Ohio. The Cardinals were led by junior quarterback Ian Kipp who had 133 yards passing, more than 100 yards rushing and the game’s winning rushing touchdown. Boston College commit Luke Floriea and running back Brian Trobel also played big roles in upsetting St. Edward at Byers Field in Parma, OH on Thursday, August 29th.

St. Ignatius defeated Loyola Academy (Ill.), 27-10 in an opening weekend non-conference matchup. The Wildcats dominated the game against defending Class 8A (largest division) champion, Loyola Academy behind QB Griffin Hanna and RB Michael Simcak. St. Ignatius’ stingy defense gave up less than 250 total yards in the Week 1 matchup. The defense will face a tough test this week against Mentor. The Cardinals run an up-tempo spread offense which creates havoc for opposing defenses.

In 2018, The Cardinals won this matchup, 28 – 7 defeating both St. Edward and St. Ignatius to start the season 2-0. The Wildcats look to avenge last year’s loss and start the season 2-0.

Good luck to both teams and stay tuned for a post-game report.
