- Denzel Ward, the team's fourth overall selection in the 2018 draft, was held out of Saturday's practice for precautionary reasons.
The talented, former Ohio State cornerback is dealing with a hip flexor strain. He was sidelined for a portion of Friday's practice with the injury.
"I do not think being out here and having a guy if there is anything that we feel that might hurt a guy, I am going to make sure that I take him out," Browns coach Hue Jackson said Friday. "He did some good things, just watching him run around, too."
- Baker Mayfield didn't know how to react when he saw his roommate assignment upon arriving in Berea.
Listed next to his name was running back Nick Chubb, the Browns' second-round selection. As a senior at Georgia, Chubb helped put an end to Mayfield's career in a dramatic, overtime thriller won by Chubb's school, Georgia, to advance to the national championship.
"I think it is some sick joke," a laughing Mayfield said.
"At first, I did not know whether I was supposed to like him or not since he beat me," Mayfield said. "He is very quiet, hard working. You can tell everything that you have heard on the outside about him – how well respected he is, his work ethic – you can see that.
"Being up close in person and being able to see what he can do and just the cuts and his strength and acceleration, it is impressive."
- Mayfield connected a few times Friday and Saturday with rookie receiver Antonio Callaway as the two look to develop more and more chemistry with each other.
Callaway was considered by many to be a first-round talent but fell to the fourth round because of off-field issues. He's expected to help a Browns wide receiving corps that has struggled with injuries and inconsistency over the past few seasons.
"He is very, very fast – a fast man," Mayfield said. "He makes good plays on the ball. When you have a guy like that and you get chemistry down, then it is dangerous. I had that with guys at Oklahoma. You get a talented receiver and then you know exactly what they are doing, you can do a lot with that. Looking forward to working with him. He is a guy that I think can help us out."
- Speaking of Callaway, the speedy former Florida receiver left practice early with a toe injury. Callaway caught 89 passes for 1,399 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons with the Gators.
- Austin Corbett was the heir apparent to Joel Bitonio at Nevada, and the two crossed paths there for one season. Bitonio was back on campus recently and the two posed for a picture together.
Corbett, though, understands that the friendship will only take him so far in the Browns locker room. He has to earn that group's respect, and the fastest way to do it is perform on the field the way he's capable.
