Browns postgame player reactions vs. Jets

Joe Thomas

On if it rattles up the whole offense when you see your quarterback goes down…

I don't think it rattles you. It certainly puts us behind the 8-ball. Johnny did a great job coming in there. He has not had a single rep with the first offense, I don't even know how long. Especially with the elbow injury he had. He didn't even get scout team reps. He was coming in here pretty much blind to the whole game plan. So that really put us behind the 8-ball.

On whether the first drive is what they believe they can do the whole season…

I think so. I look at the things we did today, and we did a lot of good things. On offense we moved the ball, throwing the ball and running the ball. I just came around to inopportune turnovers. Not that they are ever opportune. But when you turn the ball over on the first drive on the one yard line, it's not going to help. That was just the theme of the game going forward for the offense.

On what is the best way for the team to put this behind them…

It's the same process you always go through. Every Monday you come in watch the tape and try and look at the mistakes and say we know how this happened and we aren't going to let this happen again.

On what is the key to get the running game going…

Not getting behind. It's when you get behind you stop running the ball. If you want to average four yards a carry and get 100 yards rushing with the running backs, you need to get a couple long runs. Then you feel good about yourself.

On if he is shocked by the final score...

Yes.  They came out and played a really good game.  Hats off to them.

On if they lost the momentum after halftime...

They just executed at a high level.  They caused a lot more turnovers than we did.  We have to do a better job of getting the ball away and getting it back to our offense.

On the play of Johnny Manziel...

He just needs to show more ball security.  He needs to know that people are coming for him at all times.  He will be fine.

On if they are confident that they can bounce back after this loss...

We are very confident we can bounce back.  They executed very well.  I know I didn't play up to my potential.  I'm going to go into the film room, study, and come back next week ready for the Titans.

On Brandon Marshall's touchdown reception...

He had a wide split and I expected the slant.  He went up and caught the ball. I tried to get the ball out but he's a big guy and made a play.

On losing Josh McCown to injury...

That was upsetting.  Josh has been playing so well for us during training camp.  When your quarterback goes out that's tough.  But it's next man up.  You can't sit and cry about it.

On being ready next week...

You just have to stay focused.  The players that are playing have to be ready.  We can't worry about who's in or out.  We have who we have.  If you are in, you*must be ready to play. *

On the forced fumble and recovery by WR Brandon Marshall…

He made a good play. At the end of the day, the only thing that was on my mind was to put the offense in good field position. He made a veteran move. I can't tip my hat enough to him. I think that play changed the game. An interception in the red zone, we could have had the ball back up 7-0, but instead they score. That was a huge turning point. I can't let that happen. That was poor ball security on my part. But at the end of the day, that's football. They are going to make plays, and we are going to make some too.

On his interception in the first half…

Once I caught it, I was looking to get the offense in better field position and potentially try to score. Marshall was able to rip the football out of my hands. I've seen it happen before, but that has never happened to me. I've never had a receiver try to attempt the strip. It was poor ball security. I can't give him all the credit; it was poor ball security on my part. That play really shifted the momentum of the game.

On how effective the Jets offense was during the second half…

They started to impose their will and had their way. They were able to get some downhill runs. Chris Ivory is a hardnosed running back. You cannot allow him to get a full head of steam downhill. They out-physical us in every dimension. That is why the score reflected that. The good thing about this league is that you have 16 games. Just because you start off 0-1 doesn't mean too much. We have a good team in Tennessee coming in next week. We want to be able to get a win in front of our home crowd.

On the Jets scoring drive at the end of the first half…

It's tough because you don't want to give up points near the end of the half, especially in that fashion. We wanted to at least hold them to a field goal. But they were able to get points on the board. Once that happened, I think the momentum was really on their side. We weren't able to regain it. They came out and played some good football. The score reflected it. We have to play better. I'm definitely holding myself accountable, I have to play better.
