Head Coach Hue Jackson:
On WR Josh Gordon returning:
"It was good. First day back with his teammates. I think that it was good. I think that he is excited. I am sure that the players are, but we have to practice better than that."
On DB E.J. Gaines being carted off from practice and the extent of the injury:
"I will not know until I go inside until we are able to really check it thoroughly and see exactly what it is."
On Gaines' performance improving throughout camp:
"Obviously, he was a contributing member back there. He was going to play and was slated to play. That is a part of the game. We do not want to see it. Hopefully, it is nothing major. We will find out more about it. It is football. I hate to lose him, but at the same time, we know that those things do happen."
On what did not go well at practice:
"I just did not like our energy. It was [after] a day off. This team has to learn that when you get a day off, that does not mean anything. You come back with a vengeance. That is what you have to do to keep getting better. That is what I told them. That is what I expect."
On WR Damion Ratley receiving first team reps in place of WR Antonio Callaway:
"Callaway was down a little bit. He has a groin getting a little tight. Ratley made some plays today. That was good to see. He needs to keep growing and keep getting better."
On OL Shon Coleman being with the second team:
"Keep playing. If you want the job, whatever job you want, you have to go get it. You have to work at it. We have to play the best players. It is all about performance. It is not about somebody's feelings or any of that. This is a performance-based business, and Shon understands that. If he wants the job back, he has to go back and earn it."
On RB Carlos Hyde not completing practice:
"Shoulder. I do not think it is anything major. Just have to be smart with some of these guys."
On if DB Denzel Ward had a scheduled day off:
"Yes."
On what Gordon has to do to return to practice:
"I just think that there are some things that we want to see him want to do before I stick him out there. We are to trying to just get him back with his teammates, acclimating him back to the facility with his team and get him in condition. I need to make sure that this young man is in shape before I ever stick him back out that. I think that I owe that to him, to the football team and to the organization. We will kind of go from there."
On if the NFL has to sign off on Gordon practicing:
"I am sure the league probably has to say something, but at the same time, I do not think… You would have to find that out. What is most important for me, I know I want to see him in meetings and see what kind of shape he is in before I ever make a decision about trotting him out there."
On Ward not playing today despite not playing much against the Bills:
"He has that ankle that all of a sudden flares up from time to time, and I think having an extra day is going to be the best thing for him. We talked about it in length, and I think it is going to work out well."
On if he can get a sense for how well Gordon knows the playbook by watching him on the sideline:
"He retained it, yes. Josh is very intelligent. He sat in meetings today. I am sure there was some carryover from that. Being on the field, bouncing things off of (wide receivers) Coach (Adam) Henry and the rest of his teammates, some of that stuff will come back pretty quickly. I think the most important thing is let's get him back in our building, let's make sure everything is working great away from football, let's make sure he gets in great shape and then let's put him out there and go from there."
On OL Austin Corbett's biggest improvement from the first preseason game:
"I think fundamentally he did some things better with his hands. He has to continue to get better that way, but I think he is improving. He is working at it so we will keep getting him better."
