Ted Tywang is in his 10th season with the Cleveland Browns and third as Chief Administrative Officer & General Counsel for Haslam Sports Group (HSG), which owns and operates the Cleveland Browns and Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew and also owns a controlling interest in the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks. Tywang is responsible for all legal work and government affairs connected to HSG and is an integral part of both the Browns' and Crew's multifaceted community efforts.
As the Chief in-house counsel for both the Browns and Crew, Tywang provides legal oversight and strategic guidance, and is involved in various business initiatives and projects, while strengthening relationships and navigating legislation in Ohio with government officials. He provides legal guidance and oversight on all HSG major investment initiatives, long-term direction to HSG partners and executives, and also supports all HSG departments to help drive the organization's day-to-day operations. He was also named a member of Sports Business Journal's 40 under 40 class of 2025, a prestigious award for executives and other decision-makers who represent not just the present but also the future of the sports industry.
Tywang is a member of the Browns Social Justice Committee, helping the club distribute over $2.5 million to organizations improving equality and opportunity across Northeast Ohio, focusing on economic advancement through a focus on championing Black and minority-owned businesses and supporting the re-entry process, as well as police and community relations. He has also helped develop and implement the HSG Opportunity Fellowship Program, which is in its fifth year of providing a unique, immersive opportunity to high-potential, diverse recent college graduates through rotational positions six months each with the Browns and Crew.
Tywang is a key leader of the Browns' future stadium planning efforts to create a viable, long-term solution for Northeast Ohio. He has collaborated with public officials to secure a public-private partnership to support a new domed Huntington Bank Field in Brook Park. The new, state-of-the-art facility will improve fan experience, attract large-scale events and help to drive economic activity to the region. He also guided the legal and government relations process that led to the construction of Lower.com Field, home of the Columbus Crew that opened in 2022.
Complementing his professional leadership, Tywang was recognized in The Athletic's second annual NFL 40 under 40 list. He's active in the Northeast Ohio community, as it relates to creating opportunities for families and individuals from various demographic or economic backgrounds. For the past four years, he's been a board member of the Cleveland League Aid Society and was chosen by the Cuyahoga County Executive in 2022 to serve on the nine-member Board of Trustees for Cuyahoga Community College ("Tri-C"). He also serves as an ambassador for EDWINS Leadership & Restaurant Institute.
Tywang started his career in Cleveland in 2016 as Director of Legal Affairs for the Browns. He was later promoted to Vice President, General Counsel with HSG in 2019, spending four years in that capacity (2019-23). Before Cleveland, Tywang was a corporate associate in the sports law group of Proskauer for three and a half years, an international law firm headquartered in New York. He is a member of the New York State Bar and is authorized to practice law in the State of Ohio.
The Nashville, Tenn. native earned his bachelor's degree, cum laude, with honors in government from Georgetown University, where he was a four-year member and senior captain of the men's tennis team. He then went on to receive his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and President of Columbia's Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Society.
Tywang and his wife Jess reside in Shaker Heights with their four daughters in a blended family, Maggie, Frankie, Adelaide and Ramona.
