Browns name 3 team captains for 2019 season

The Browns on Friday named their team captains for the 2019 season with one representative from each phase of the game.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield, linebacker Christian Kirksey and long snapper Charley Hughlett were named team captains after a vote by teammates. The Browns will also have game captains throughout the season.

Mayfield, who is entering his second season, has been lauded for his leadership since he stepped onto the field for the first time Week 3 of last season. That’s grown and grown throughout the offseason as Mayfield enters his first year as the team’s clear-cut starter at quarterback.

“For those guys to see the same guy every day, they know what is expected,” Mayfield said at the start of training camp. “They know I am going to push them. I am going to push myself. It is nothing personal when it comes to getting after somebody, and I expect them to hold me accountable as well. That is the beauty of having guys that really want to win.”

This marks the third straight year Kirksey, one of the longest tenured Browns, has been a team captain. The veteran linebacker is set to play a significant role in the middle of Cleveland’s defense after missing the second half of 2018 with an injury.

“It’s an exciting time to be here,” Kirksey said during the offseason. “Out of my six years of being here, going into it I feel very, very confident but we’ve got to block out what people expect us to do and do what we’ve got to do. At the end of the day, we control our destiny. We control our fate.”

Hughlett has been the Browns’ long snapper since the 2015 season. After an offseason overhaul on special teams that included a new coordinator (Mike Priefer) and two rookie specialists making the 53-man roster, Hughlett is the veteran of the group.

“We call the jug machine little Charles. He is kind of like the human JUGS machine,” Priefer said. “He is very good, a true pro. All the snappers in this league, there is only one of them on the team so they are all very very hard but he is a hard worker. He is really good with these two young kids and he will be a good leader for us in that room.”
