Browns TE Gary Barnidge poised for training camp return following surgery

Browns Pro Bowl tight end Gary Barnidge underwent sports hernia surgery early Thursday, coach Hue Jackson said.

The Pro Bowler was not at the team's final OTA on Wednesday and will miss next week's veteran minicamp but will be ready to go for training camp, Jackson said. The Browns coach confirmed the injury news before hitting the links at the Cleveland Browns Foundation's 17th annual golf tournament.

Barnidge is coming off a career year that ended with his first Pro Bowl invitation. The 30-year-old veteran caught 79 passes for 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns, setting a number of personal bests and matching some franchise marks along the way.

With Barnidge out, the Browns will have five tight ends at minicamp: E.J. Bibbs, Connor Hamlett, Randall Telfer and rookies Seth DeValve and J.P. Holtz.
