CLEVELAND — The Browns defeated the Giants, 10-6, on Monday night in their second preseason game.
We're breaking it down by the numbers:
212 — In a game dominated by defense, the Browns held the Giants to 212 total yards, including less than 100 in the first half.
2 — They also forced two turnovers, including a strip by veteran cornerback Jason McCourty that proved to be a turning point in the game. Five plays later, the Browns scored a go-ahead touchdown and took a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
31 — Rookie safety Jabrill Peppers earned his first start Monday and also contributed in a big way on special teams. Peppers, the former Michigan standout and 25th overall NFL Draft pick, returned his first punt of the night 31 yards and sent the crowd at FirstEnergy Stadium into a frenzy.
6 — Second-year linebacker Joe Schobert led the Browns with six tackles. The former Wisconsin standout also recorded a sack and tackle-for-loss.
25 — The Browns held New York to 3-of-12 (25 percent) on third-down conversions.
109 — Despite the absence of Isaiah Crowell (groin), the Browns totaled 105 yards rushing behind Duke Johnson Jr., Matthew Dayes, Terrence Magee and quarterback DeShone Kizer.
10 — Speaking of Dayes, the rookie from N.C. State had 10 touches for 44 yards, including five catches for 29 yards. Since coming to Cleveland as the second-to-last pick in the draft, Dayes has caught the attention of the coaching staff throughout training camp.
9 — On a day where the Browns totaled less than 250 yards of offense, they committed nine penalties for 70 yards.
14 — Fourteen different players caught at least one pass Monday night.
