2020 NFL Draft

11 trades shaped Browns' 2017 draft class and at least 5 are set to affect 2018's

Paul DePodesta made it clear Saturday: The Browns didn't enter the 2017 NFL Draft with a set allotment of trades they planned to make.

It just worked out that Cleveland, which made five trades during last year's draft, made four of the record 38 swaps that occurred throughout the three-day, seven-round event. But a trade as far back as June 2015 served as the first of 11 that had some kind of impact on the Browns' 10-man class of 2017.

"We try to be very proactive in general," DePodesta said. "We also just try to be really, really prepared for whatever might be happening throughout the three days."

In chronological order, here are the 11 trades that impacted the events of this past weekend. Asterisks are placed next to the trades that affect both 2017 and 2018. As it stands today, Cleveland has 12 picks in the 2018 draft.

Take a look at all 10 picks in Cleveland's 2017 Draft class.

June 6, 2015: Browns trade an undisclosed draft pick to the 49ers for P Andy Lee. It's later settled the Browns will part with their 2017 seventh-round pick. The 49ers later flipped the pick in a deal with the Vikings, who selected Miami WR Stacy Coley.

*April 20, 2016: Browns trade the No. 2 pick in the 2016 draft and a conditional 2017 fourth-rounder for Philadelphia's No. 8, third-round and fourth-round picks in the 2016 draft, the Eagles' first-round pick in the 2017 draft and their second-round pick in 2018. The trade gave Cleveland multiple first-round picks for the second time in three years and gave it ammunition to make a handful of the trades that follow. Two trades not included on this list are deals Cleveland made later in the 2016 draft with the Panthers and Raiders that resulted in the Browns landing QB Cody Kessler late in the third round, DB Derrick Kindred and WR Ricardo Louis in the fourth and WR Jordan Payton and OL Spencer Drango in the fifth. Philadelphia ultimately received one of the Browns' four compensatory picks in the 2017 draft. The Eagles swapped the pick with the Vikings, who swapped the pick with the Chiefs, who used the No. 139 pick on Michigan WR Jehu Chesson. As reported this weekend by numerous outlets, this trade and the subsequent trades it's helped produce have resulted in the Browns adding nine players with more to come.

April 28, 2016: On the clock with the No. 8 pick, the Browns traded with the Titans and moved down to No. 15. In return, Tennessee sent a 2016 third-round pick, which was used on OL Shon Coleman, and its 2017 second-round pick, which was used to select QB DeShone Kizer.

Aug. 25, 2016: Browns trade LB Barkevious Mingo to the Patriots in exchange for New England's 2017 fifth-round pick. After two more trades, this pick was finally made by the Packers, who selected Purdue WR DeAngelo Yancey.

*Aug. 29, 2016: The Browns traded Lee and a 2017 seventh-round pick -- acquired from Indianapolis one year earlier in a deal for DL Billy Winn -- to the Panthers for a 2018 fourth-round pick and P Kasey Redfern. The Panthers used the 2017 seventh-rounder on Georgia Tech K Harrison Butker. Cleveland entered the 2017 draft with no seventh-round picks.

Oct. 31, 2016: Browns trade a conditional draft pick to the Patriots for Pro Bowl LB Jamie Collins. In January, Cleveland signed Collins, who led the team in tackles during the second half of the season, to a four-year extension. The pick turned out to be a third-round compensatory pick, which New England used in a trade with the Saints. New Orleans selected Florida Atlantic OLB Trey Hendrickson with the No. 103 pick.

*March 10, 2017: Cleveland trades a 2017 fourth-round compensatory pick (No. 142) for QB Brock Osweiler, a 2017 sixth-round pick (No. 188 and originally owned by Chicago) and its 2018 second-round pick. The Browns used the No. 188 pick in a Day 3 trade with the Jets, who picked Louisiana Lafayette RB Elijah McGuire. The Texans took Clemson DL Carlos Watkins at 142.

*April 27, 2017: The Browns trade the No. 12 pick (originally acquired in the Eagles trade) to the Texans for the No. 25 pick and Houston's 2018 first-round pick. The Texans select Clemson QB Deshaun Watson at No. 12 and the Browns take S Jabrill Peppers at No. 25.

April 27, 2017: Cleveland trades its second-round pick (No. 33) and fourth-round pick (No. 108) to Green Bay for the Packers' first-round pick (No. 29). The Browns take Miami TE David Njoku with the pick.

April 29, 2017: The Browns trade their fifth-round pick (No. 145) and the Patriots' fifth-round pick they acquired in the Mingo trade (No. 175) to Denver for a fourth-round pick (No. 126) and a seventh-round pick (No. 252). Cleveland selects Houston DB Howard Wilson at 126 and North Carolina State RB Matthew Dayes at 252. Denver takes Michigan TE Jake Butt and trades No. 175 to the Packers, who took Yancey.

April 29, 2017: The Browns trade their fifth-round compensatory pick (No. 181) and the sixth-round pick they acquired from Houston in March to the Jets for a fifth-round pick (No. 160) and a seventh-rounder (No. 224). The Browns select OL Roderick Johnson at 160 and K Zane Gonzalez at 224. The Jets select West Georgia DE Dylan Donahue at 181 and McGuire at 188.

2018 only

Sept. 3, 2016: The Browns trade DB Justin Gilbert to the Steelers for a 2018 sixth-round pick.
