2020 NFL Draft

Browns draft TCU DB Derrick Kindred in 4th round

The Browns continued rolling through Saturday's fourth round by selecting TCU defensive back Derrick Kindred with the No. 129 pick.

Kindred is the eighth player to be selected by the Browns in the 2016 NFL Draft. He joins Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman (No. 15), Oklahoma State defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah (No. 32), Penn State defensive end Carl Nassib (No. 65), Auburn offensive tackle Shon Coleman (No. 76) and USC quarterback Cody Kessler (No. 93), Wisconsin linebacker Joe Schobert (No. 99) and Auburn wide receiver Ricardo Louis (No. 114) as the newest Brown.

"I just talked to them at pro day. They were just telling me that I was on the radar and I looked forward to talking with them more throughout this process," Kindred said on a conference call with reporters. "They kept their word and I really appreciate that."

A two-year starter at TCU, Kindred played through a collar bone injury throughout his senior season and finished with 87 tackles, second-most on the team. He was a Big 12 honorable mention selection in 2014, when he started all 14 games and finished with 80 tackles for four interceptions.

"At TCU, we have great staff around us. Our strength and conditioning coach, he did a great job of keeping me healthy rehab-wise and our trainers did a great job keeping me healthy throughout this whole season, monitoring me and keeping me in rehab," Kindred said.

"I didn't even have to get surgery on it. They gave me a couple options. Either I had surgery and sat out the whole year; get surgery, put a plate in there and sit out eight weeks or I could play the whole season with it. At the time, I felt like the team needed me to step up and be a leader out there so I took the risk and took the chance of playing through it with it hurt."

Kindred, a 5-foot-10, 210-pounder from San Antonio, joins a Browns secondary in need of depth; he said he can play either free or strong safety.

"I'm good at playing both. I can be a strong safety and be on the line of scrimmage and make the big plays," he said, "or I can be at the back end playing the deep ball."
