Bills seek to limit Myles Garrett's impact in Week 16 | What They're Saying

Garrett is 1.5 sacks away from breaking the NFL single-season sack record

Bills Browns What They're Saying 12.19 article

DE Myles Garrett has been a threat on the field for the 13 teams the Browns have played this season.

Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady said Garrett remains a challenge few in the NFL have figured out. Garrett has 21.5 sacks, including eight consecutive games with a sack in a period in which he has recorded 17.5 of his sacks this season.

Brady and the Bills face Garrett in Week 16 at Huntington Bank Field where Garrett has a chance to set the single-season sack record. Garrett sits just 1.5 sacks from setting the record. The task that the Bills face is stopping Garrett from wrecking the game and in the process, stopping him from setting the record against them.

"I don't know if really anybody has figured that out," Brady said. "I'm understanding of the season that he's having right now and look, he's literally the best there is. It's going to be a huge challenge for us. We're going to obviously sort through that, but it's a great opportunity for our guys."

Bills QB Josh Allen said he hasn't thought about the fact that he could be the quarterback that is sacked to break the record.

Allen has the ability to scramble away from Garrett if needed to avoid a sack. He has 535 rushing yards and has scored 12 rushing touchdowns, matching his touchdown total from his 2024 MVP season. However, Garrett is one of the most athletic players on the field, according to Allen, even with Garrett's 6-foot-4, 272 lb. frame.

"We have to be ready for everything that they can throw at us, but you have to be aware of where 95 is at all times," Allen said. "He's the biggest guy out there. He's the fastest guy out there. His ability to get off blocks, his motor is higher than really anybody else that you'll ever play. He can beat you with speed and power. I mean, he's just the all-around football player (on film)."

T Spencer Brown will be one of the players the Bills employ to stop Garrett from sacking Allen. That task will be a test for Brown and Buffalo's offensive line that has allowed 33 sacks this season, including eight against the Texans in Week 12, and 13 sacks in the last four weeks. While the Bills will scheme to keep Garrett out of the backfield, Brown said they have to read and react to stop him.

"He's just so strong and powerful and I think he just breathes oxygen and he gets more yoked, which, I'm jealous of," Brown said. "He can kind of line up wherever he wants and he kind of has that effect of like a Maxx Crosby, T.J. Watt, those guys that can just kind of play out of scheme and make plays happen. So, it's not really something you can plan for, you just kind of have to read and react and hopefully you do it quick enough."

Other teams' plans this season have included trying to chip Garrett with tight ends or pulling a guard to help the tackle block Garrett. The Ravens used three players to block Garrett in Week 11, but he still found a way to break into the backfield and sack QB Lamar Jackson.

"There's only so many things you can do," Bills head coach Sean McDermott said. "You watch people who try and chip Myles (Garrett) and I'm watching the same tapes that I mentioned earlier here and you're saying you can chip them. You can almost put sometimes three people I see on him, and he just runs through it all. He's just powerful, big, explosive, fast, has a feel for the game."

Stopping Garrett could be a priority on defense but on offense, McDermott said QB Shedeur Sanders poses a challenge for the Bills' defense. Sanders possesses a dual-threat skillset similar to Allen where he can find success with both his arms and legs. Sanders threw a pair of 40-plus yard passes to WR Isaiah Bond and also scrambled out of a collapsing pocket to gain 15 yards against the Bears.

"Good young player off to a great start, dangerous with the tool set that he brings to the table," McDermott said. "And he has done a great job. I think their offense has actually ratcheted up since he has been under center, so that'll be a big challenge for us."

Limiting Sanders and Garrett will help the Bills to achieve what they're coming to Cleveland for – a win. With a win and a Colts or Texans loss or tie, the Bills could clinch a playoff spot for the seventh consecutive season. Brown said even with Garrett breaking the sack record on the horizon, that isn't his main concern going into Week 16.

"The record might sting a little bit if it does happen on me, I guess I'd be like, 'Yeah, kids, that's me right there getting absolutely blasted,'" Brown said. "So hopefully it doesn't happen, but a win is the focus. If it happens, it happens but hopefully walk out of there with a win."
