Players of the Game 8.23 Rams Browns

The Browns capped off their preseason with a 19-17 win against the Rams at Huntington Bank Field on Aug. 23.

The Browns finished the preseason perfect for the first time since 2021 with the win against Los Angeles. Next on the schedule is Cleveland's season opener against the Bengals on Sept. 7 at Huntington Bank Field.

With the regular season on the horizon, let's look at three players who made a difference against the Rams.

QB Dillon Gabriel

A week after making his NFL debut, QB Dillon Gabriel led the Browns' offense to points during the two drives he played in the second quarter.

Gabriel played at two different tempos in his two drives. His first drive gained 70 yards over 15 plays and saw the Browns hold the ball for 6:25, their longest drive of the game. He led the offense to the Rams 10-yard line before two passes fell incomplete, leading to a 28-yard field goal by K Dustin Hopkins.

His second drive was much faster due to having to run the two-minute offense with 1:55 left in the first half. Gabriel led the Browns from their own 14-yard line into the Rams' end zone. He passed for 86 yards during the drive, completing 9-of-11 passes on the way to a 3-yard touchdown.

On both drives, Gabriel controlled the game efficiently and led the Browns to 10 points. Gabriel went 2-for-3 on third down conversions in the game, both of which came in Los Angeles territory as the Browns converted on first and second downs in their own territory.

He finished his second NFL game with 129 passing yards, leading Cleveland, and threw his first NFL touchdown on the two-minute drill possession.

"For Dillon (Gabriel), it goes back to the spring," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "It goes back to all the work that he's put in, with all these young players, they've put in from the spring to now and (he) just needs to continue to build on that work."

DE Adin Huntington

DE Adin Huntington showcased his versatility against the Rams, being a jack of all trades. On the first offensive play of the game for the Browns, he was lined up at fullback. Then throughout the game, he was on the special teams unit. Finally, he was a disruptive force on defense, notching four tackles and getting two sacks on back-to-back plays.

"Playing physical achieves your goals. If you show up and you're playing physical on defense and then you do it on special teams, we have offensive coaches that are going to want to steal that physicality," Stefanski said. "The more you can do, and he's somebody that has certainly done it on defense, has done it on special teams and we value physicality."

Even on defense, Huntington was versatile in where he lined up. On his first sack, he lined up at defensive tackle. He executed a swim move past the right guard, tracked down Rams QB Dresser Winn and brought him down in combination with DE Titus Leo.

On his second sack, he lined up at defensive end. He stunted inside, crashed through a gap in the middle of the offensive line and hit Winn, popping the football loose.

Following the game, Stefanski announced that Huntington made the 53-man roster. Huntington was signed as an undrafted free agent in May and has used training camp and the preseason to showcase his skills to the coaching staff. In the Browns three preseason games, he recorded 2.5 sacks and 10 tackles, leading the Browns in sacks.

"He's on our football team. (Andrew Berry) said I could share that with you guys. So, he made the football team," Stefanski said.

K Andre Szmyt

With two seconds left on the clock with a chance to win the game, K Andre Szmyt lined up to secure the Browns' perfect preseason with the ball lined up in the middle of the field.

He took three steps to the ball and hit the 37-yard field goal through the middle of the uprights. The field goal capped a perfect kicking preseason for Szmyt, making all three of his field goals and the one extra point he attempted.
