After a 17-16 loss to the Bengals in the season opener, the Browns get another chance against a divisional opponent in Week 2 when they play the Ravens. Cleveland will travel to Baltimore for its game on Sept. 14 at M&T Bank Field at 1 p.m.

With multiple factors like missed kicks and interceptions, among others, leading to the Bengals winning by a point, head coach Kevin Stefanski believes the Browns are capable of playing at a higher level.

"Really frustrating to not come away with a win in that game, but the bottom line is, as we all know, there's things that we have to do better," Stefanski said. "You're not going to win those types of games, so we'll learn from it. Guys are in meetings right now watching this tape and need to learn from some of the stuff that we can do better, both players and coaches, and then get back to work with another division game coming up on Sunday."

Here are the main pieces of news heading into Week 2.

Injury Update

RT Jack Conklin got poked in the eye in the second quarter of the game against the Bengals and was unable to return. After the game, G Joel Bitonio said that Conklin wasn't able to open his eye, keeping him from returning to the game.

Stefanski provided an update on the tackle on Sept. 8, saying he's doing much better than he was after the game. Stefanski also clarified that Conklin's eye injury was the only injury to come out of the season opener.

T Cornelius Lucas filled in for Conklin due to the injury and received praise from C Ethan Pocic on taking over at right tackle.

"I thought he did a great job," Pocic said. "Being in the number two role in the NFL is hard sometimes because you don't get all the reps during the week and I thought without him getting a lot of reps, he did amazing. Without him getting all those reps, he did great. So, I just thought he stepped up to the plate. He's a veteran and he did a great job."

Staying the Course

Following K Andre Szmyt missing a field goal and an extra point in the second half of the Browns' one-point loss to the Bengals, Stefanski backed the kicker.

"Andre knows we trust him, knows that he's got to come through for us in those moments," Stefanski said. "I thought he had a really good warm-up, banged a couple early in the game and missed those two at the end. Those are kicks that we expect him to make. I'm really just focused on that game, and we expect him to come through for us."

Szmyt made an extra point on a Browns touchdown to tie the game at seven and made a 45-yard field goal before halftime, going 1-for-2 in field goals and extra points in his NFL regular-season debut.

T Dawand Jones debuts at left tackle

After an offseason of making the switch from right tackle to left tackle, T Dawand Jones started against the Bengals at his new position. In his first matchup, he faced Bengals DE Trey Hendrickson, who led the NFL in sacks in 2024. Henderickson finished the game with three tackles, one tackle for loss, three quarterback hits and a sack.

Stefanski said Jones had some positive moments and learning opportunities from his first regular season game at the position.

"He just needs to be consistent for us and play like I know he's capable of playing," Stefanski said. "Again, there are good moments out there versus a very good rusher, but I do feel like he can play better."

Pocic has seen the growth from Jones during the offseason and even knows what it's like to switch positions in the NFL. After starting as a guard with the Seahawks, Pocic transitioned to center in his second season, eventually becoming Seattle's starting center.

Now with Jones blocking the quarterback's blind side at left tackle, Pocic said Jones continues to be open to learning and improving, helping him in his journey.

"Dawand (Jones) is doing great. Just growing as a player and learning. Switching sides in the NFL is not easy," Pocic said. "That's something that a lot of people think is kind of like Madden where you can just like put a right tackle at left tackle, but that's not the case, and it takes some time."

Prepping for the Ravens

After hosting the Bengals in Week 1, the Browns have another AFC North opponent on their docket in Week 2 with the Ravens.

Both the Browns and Ravens are coming into Week 2 0-1 after both AFC North teams suffered hard losses. Baltimore gave up a 40-25 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the game, ultimately losing 41-40 to the Bills. Pocic said that as a team, they look forward to these AFC North games. He added that the Browns aren't taking Baltimore any lighter just because of the events of Week 1.

"They're a great team. They're going to come out ready no matter what happened yesterday," Pocic said. "So, for us, we just have to correct our mistakes and move forward."

Going into Week 2 in Baltimore, the Browns will need to put Week 1 behind them and focus on the Ravens. Stefanski knows that in order to win against the Ravens, a team they're familiar with, it won't come easy for the Browns.

QB Lamar Jackson and RB Derrick Henry showcased how they are one of the top quarterback-running back duos in the NFL against the Bills despite the loss. Jackson threw for 209 yards and completed 14 of 19 passes, including two passing touchdowns. He added a touchdown on the ground, scrambling for 70 yards on six attempts. Henry ran for 169 yards and broke off two 30-plus yard rushing touchdowns, the latter of which gave the Ravens their 40-25 lead.

After allowing two yards per carry to the Bengals, facing the rushing attack of Jackson and Henry is going to be a test for Cleveland's defense. Jackson is also coming off a career-year as a passer, throwing for more than 4,000 yards with only four interceptions. The Browns' defense will need to game plan for the impacts that Jackson and Henry can have on a game.

"Obviously, we know it's a division opponent for us. It's Baltimore who we know well. They know us well," Stefanski said. "We expect it to be hard fought like it always is."
