As QB Tyler Huntley handed the ball to RB Derrick Henry early in the fourth quarter in Week 6, LB Carson Schwesinger diagnosed the play immediately. Schwesinger's instinctual read allowed him to shoot past the attempted block at the second level from T Roger Rosengarten and hit Henry just short of the first-down marker.
But when Schwesinger went to make the tackle, he also ripped the ball loose from Henry's grip. CB Tyson Campbell jumped on the fumble as Schwesinger pumped his fists above his head while running off the field. When the Browns needed a momentum-swinging play, Schwesinger delivered.
"That's what we talked about, the ball is oxygen," Schwesinger said on Oct. 18 after the game. "That was big in the offseason for me with trying to get the ball out in the run game."
Six games into the season, Schwesinger has continued to be one of the leaders and anchors of the Browns' defense, which is tied for the fifth best scoring defense in the NFL. The forced fumble against the Ravens in Week 6 flipped the game for the Browns, setting up the game-tying touchdown run from RB Audric Estimé. The clutch play also marked the second straight week that Schwesinger caused a turnover in the fourth quarter following his forced fumble in Week 5 against the Jets with 4:20 remaining.
"I don't know if there are enough adjectives," defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg said. "But it doesn't surprise any of us. The way he works, the way he prepares, and the way he shows up for his teammates, it's unbelievable. Everybody will celebrate the great, forced fumble, obviously, but his preparation through the week, the way he runs the defense, the way he attacks his job is unbelievable."
Coming out of UCLA as a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Schwesinger wore the green dot as the Browns' on-field defensive play caller during his rookie season. He started all 16 games he appeared in and finished the season eighth in the NFL with 146 tackles. He also had seven games with double-digit tackles, which led all rookies. Schwesinger's play earned him the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award and cemented his status as a centerpiece of the Browns' defense.
Schwesinger has continued his dominant play this season, and remains in the green dot role, as he leads the Browns with 56 tackles through the first six weeks. He has also added three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one sack. He has led the Browns in tackles in four of their six games this season.
Most recently, his play took center stage in the Browns' win over the Ravens, where Schwesinger's on-the-field impact helped propel Cleveland's comeback. After the Browns' defense gave up 10 points on the Ravens' first two drives in Week 6, they didn't allow any on the following nine possessions. DE Jared Verse credited that turnaround to Schwesinger's command of the defense. Verse also praised Schwesinger's knowledge of the game, which he has noticed since he joined the team in June.
"I'm not really surprised from watching his film last year and from hearing what I heard about him before I got here," Verse said. "But then once I got here, being around him, you understand everything. He sees the defense so differently. He's probably one of the smartest people I've ever been around."
As a young player in his second year, Schwesinger has developed his own leadership style, fueled by his play. Schwesinger isn't 'overly vocal' on the sidelines between drives, according to LB Easton Mascarenas-Arnold. Instead, he has continued to lead by example this season, maintaining the same standard that he helped set last year.
"The way he plays and prepares, we feed off of him," Mascarenas-Arnold said on Oct. 18. "That's what most people, especially the vets, respect out of him."
Schwesinger explained that he has been able to establish the leadership displayed throughout his first two seasons due to his passion for football. He knows that when the time comes to make key plays on Sundays, he will be in the right position.
Heading into their Week 7 matchup with the Titans, Schwesinger's passion-driven leadership and play on the field are continuing to impress his teammates and coaches. He has continued to be an anchor and core piece of a young Browns' defense that has propelled the team to first place in the AFC North this season.
"When you mention his name, it holds weight," DT Adin Huntington said on Oct 18. "You can see that in his preparation mentally and his preparation physically. And you can in his effort and his physicality on the football field. Carson does a great job and he's going to be in this league a long time, he's going to be an All-Pro and get everything else he wants."
