The Browns are in the thick of preparation for the 2025 season as they took to the practice fields for the second day of training camp.
"I would say it's a little bit like the first day of school because all your players are back in the building, your coaching staff, your support staff," Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Andrew Berry said. "It really is. It's really great to see everyone."
Berry has a high level of optimism in a number of players on their roster, as well as the offensive scheme their offensive coaching staff has put into place for the 2025 season. He also sees a benefit to the number of young players on the roster who could earn roles this year.
As they continue their preparation for a new season, they are holding onto the mentality that this year is a new year for the Browns. They want to learn as much as possible about their roster during training camp, provide meaningful reps for their players, evaluate young players and determine roles.
"So, I think this is a year where we have the opportunity to see a lot of growth with some of the players who are going to be given and earn new opportunities," Berry said. "But like I said, we're going to be focused on the work."
Here are the main takeaways from Berry's training camp press conference.
Outlook on quarterback room
The Browns will continue their four-quarterback competition over the course of training camp, evaluating Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, Kenny Pickett and Shedeur Sanders.
Yet, as they do so, Berry said he could see a scenario in which all four quarterbacks are on the roster come the start of the 2025 regular season. He explained they have looked at the last five roster spots as developmental spots that could come from any position.
"I also think with the roster flexibility nowadays – especially with the elevations that you're able to have on the practice squad – there's just more flexibility in terms of how to build your 48-man game day roster, where it's maybe not as quite as restrictive in the past," Berry said. "Now, that being said, when roster rules were more, let's say, draconian, there have been teams that have carried four. So, if there are four that are 53-man worthy, we think it makes the most sense for us to keep them."
Those roster decisions are still a way off, with the remainder of training camp and three preseason games to come before the roster is decided. For now, the Browns will continue their evaluation of all four quarterbacks over the course of camp to make an informed decision on the starting quarterback.
"Kevin and I might be the only ones who talk more about the quarterback position than you all are throughout the next couple weeks, and it's something that we'll talk about consistently," Berry said. "But at the end of the day, I trust him. I mean, like, I trust our coaching staff in terms of who they want to play. I think we'll get a lot more information over the next few weeks."
Discussing Quinshon Judkins
Berry addressed the legal situation surrounding rookie RB Quinshon Judkins, who was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor battery (domestic) on July 12.
"Our initial responsibility as an organization is to gather as much information, particularly quality information, as possible," Berry said. "Rarely, even though it's a highly public incident, rarely does all the information become public or easily accessible. Which is why it's so important for us to work through the legal process, work with investigators, obviously communicate and share information with the league. But it's not until that time that we get enough information and enough quality information that we will determine or decide the next steps of what to do with that with the player or the employee.
"So, in terms of Quinshon (Judkins) specifically, we're still gathering information," Berry continued. "Given the fact that he's still in an active legal situation, there's not much that I can comment specifically on his case at this point. But as we get to the point where we have enough information to determine the next steps, we will certainly do so."
Judkins is unsigned by the Browns and is away from the team as the Browns gather more information surrounding the incident. Berry said they are handling the situation with a day-to-day approach, but reiterated the Browns take the allegations seriously. They have continued to take steps as an organization to increase education and awareness and provide tools to build healthy relationships. In 2024, they invited Sabrina Greenlee to share her story with the players. They also brought in the Senior Vice President of Special Investigations for the NFL Lisa Friel to speak and educate the players.
"One of the things that we want to make sure that we do with all members of our organization is provide the resources, support and education so that all of them can have safe, healthy domestic partnerships," Berry said.
