First and Ten Special Feature: How Vickie Adamus is giving back

051520_community

Volunteering in the Cleveland community and serving others is what matters most to Vickie Adamus. In fact, she even planned for this in her retirement! After working for over 35 years as a school teacher, Vickie set her heart on supporting Cleveland and its residents. Vickie has served in a variety of ways, ranging from providing entertainment to basic needs.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank (GCFB) has appreciated Vickie's volunteer efforts, especially now – during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vickie is supporting the development department, by sending external communication and ways to support the GCFB. She helps with the mailing process weekly, including assisting with donor letters. Prior to COVID-19, Vickie volunteered in the kitchen by completing food data entries, and would fill-in whenever the GCFB needed extra help. Last, Vicki would help cover administrative duties as a receptionist. Through her many works, it is no surprise why Vickie is one of GCFB's favorite volunteers!

Vickie has also volunteered with Destination Cleveland, which drives economic impact through leisure and business travel experiences. She was previously active with hosting large-scale conventions and events. One of the last major events she supported was the MLB All-Star Game, where she directed volunteers as a Team Captain and supported the arrival of guests. She also volunteered with incoming Cleveland crew ships by greeting visitors, guiding them to local attractions, and answering questions.

In addition, Vickie has volunteered with Playhouse Square and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. She volunteers twice a month with Playhouse Square as a redcoat usher. In this role, she escorts guests, scans tickets, shares program brochures, and fills guests' needs. With the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, she volunteers with Scenic Event Trains and Polar Express. The Scenic Event Trains have volunteers like Vickie who can aid in concessions, bingo and wine tasting cars. With the Polar Express, Vickie dresses up as an elf and engages with many children. Polar Express elves read children's stories, sing songs, and entertain children until Santa arrives.

It is an honor to highlight Vickie as an individual who has given back to our community! If you too volunteer, or want to get started, then join the Browns First and Ten movement! This movement was created to increase volunteerism in the community. Fans can participate by pledging to #give10 here. Also, fans who pledge and submit their story here can be featured in Browns monthly First and Ten Highlights stories!
