Myles Garrett notches record five sacks

game recap 10.26 browns patriots article

DE Myles Garrett had a historic day in getting into the backfield, notching five sacks to set career-high and breaking his own Browns record.

The Browns, however, fell to the Patriots, losing 32-13, at Gillette Stadium on Oct. 26.

Cleveland led 7-3 in the first quarter and trailed 9-7 at halftime. The Patriots pulled away with the game in the second half, scoring 21 points in the third quarter.

QB Dillon Gabriel threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns but also threw two interceptions, his first turnovers this season. Tight ends David Njoku and Harold Fannin Jr. both caught a touchdown in the game. LB Carson Schwesinger was another bright spot on the defensive side, getting his first career interception.

Key Moments

Patriots score 14 points in less than three minutes

The Browns entered the second half down 9-7 with a chance to retake the lead. New England's defense, however, forced a three-and-out. The Patriots' offense then took advantage of the opportunity to build a bigger lead.

Patriots QB Drake Maye and RB TreVeyon Henderson ran for six yards on back-to-back plays to open the drive. Henderson followed up his run with a 27-yard gain to get to the Browns 38-yard line. Maye and WR Mack Hollins ran a flea flicker, gaining 19 yards to move into the red zone. RB Rhamondre Stevenson and WR DeMario Douglas gained 12 yards combined, moving New England to the 7-yard line. Maye finished the drive, floating a 7-yard pass to TE Hunter Henry for a touchdown, extending the Patriots lead to 16-7.

New England regained possession nearly 1:30 later after LB Robert Spillane intercepted Gabriel's pass, taking the ball to the Browns 6-yard line. Garrett sacked Maye on first down, his fourth of the game, to push the Patriots back. Maye, however, found WR Stefon Diggs for eight yards on the next play to get to the 1-yard line. On third-and-1, the duo connected again with a quick pass for a touchdown, making the score 23-7.

Myles Garrett sacks prevent touchdowns

Twice during the first half when New England was in the red zone, a Garrett sack prevented the Patriots from getting touchdowns.

On New England's first possession, they reached the Browns 4-yard line. After DE Alex Wright brought down Stevenson for a loss of four yards and Maye threw an incomplete pass, the Patriots faced a third-and-8 on the 8-yard line. Garrett beat his man and found Maye as the quarterback was looking for a receiver, sacking him for a loss of 10 yards. Patriots K Andres Borregales made a 36-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

Following two fruitless Patriots possessions, they again reached the red zone. Facing third-and-6 from the Cleveland 7-yard line, Garrett again reached the backfield and brought down Maye for a loss of seven. Borregales made a 32-yard field goal to get within a point, trailing 7-6, in the second quarter.

Browns take six plays to score on their first possession

Gabriel and Fannin, facing third-and-11, connected for a 19-yard pass to continue the opening drive. Cleveland, after a 3-yard run from Judkins, called an end-around for WR Malachi Corley. He ran around the edge and down the sideline, getting into the red zone at the Patriots' 18-yard line.

Gabriel and Fannin connected again to finish the drive. Gabriel floated a pass to an open Fannin, who had a clear lane into the end zone, giving the Browns a 7-3 lead.
