In each away game this season, the Browns' defense has given up more net total yards than the last.
Cleveland has gone from allowing 242 yards against the Ravens in Week 2 to giving up a season-high 422 yards against the Patriots in Week 8. The Browns are looking to reverse that trend and get their first road win in Week 10 against the Jets at MetLife Stadium.
"We just have to put an emphasis on starting fast and playing fast once we go on the road, still bringing that home energy to those away games," CB Denzel Ward said. "We're not going to have the fans cheering for us, but still feeding off each other's energy, going out there, making plays early and getting it going."
Shutting down the Jets crowd will need to include slowing down New York's ground game. Running the ball has been the Jets' strength this season as they have average 143.6 rushing yards per game, the third-best average in the NFL.
RB Breece Hall has been at the forefront of New York's success in the run game, totaling 581 rushing yards this season for the 12th-most rushing yards in the NFL. Hall helped lead New York to its first win of the season in Week 8 against the Bengals when he scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and helped the Jets overcome a 15-point deficit. Hall ran for a season-high 133 yards and threw the game-winning touchdown with 1:54 left in the game.
While Hall's game on the ground helped the Jets get into the win column, New York's passing game has lagged behind. The Jets rank last in the league in passing yards, averaging just 156.5 passing yards per game.
The Jets quarterback situation has dictated their offense with two mobile quarterbacks in Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor. Fields has been one of the best scrambling quarterbacks this season, ranking second among quarterbacks with 288 rushing yards and fifth among all players in yards per carry with 5.43.
Fields has also been an effective passer, not throwing an interception so far this season in his seven starts and 167 pass attempts. He had one of his best games throwing the ball this season in New York's win against Cincinnati, passing for 244 yards and a touchdown.
Taylor has backed up Fields primarily but has played in three games this season for 23.3 percent of New York's snaps, per Pro Football Reference. He hasn't had as much success throwing the ball as Fields, completing 62.3 percent of his passes. He has thrown for 379 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn hasn't announced which quarterback he will start, but Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Cleveland will be prepared for whoever starts on Nov. 9.
"Obviously two different players but they're both good in their own right," Stefanski said. "Justin Fields is extremely dangerous, very fast. They do a great job in the run game. He's a threat to make all the throws with his arm strength in the pass game and then he can tuck in and run as you've seen throughout this season. He has made some huge plays with his legs. Obviously, Tyrod (Taylor's) a veteran that knows what to do with the football. Very accurate, good athlete, can make you miss obviously as he moves outside the pocket."

New York's offensive line has had trouble protecting the quarterback, giving up an average of 3.9 sacks per game for the third-most sacks in the NFL this season. The Browns have been successful at getting to the quarterback with three sacks per game, the eighth-best average in the league. Cleveland had its best game getting to the quarterback against the Patriots, sacking QB Drake Maye six times. DE Myles Garrett had a career-high five sacks in the game, bringing his season total to 10 sacks. Garrett can build upon his performance and wreak havoc on Fields or Taylor.
"Everybody's got a plan, we'll just react to it," Schwartz said. "He has a good plan for dealing with chips. We've moved him around maybe just a little bit more. Try to keep the target off him, moved him a little bit more right and left. He still wears number 95 and he's 6-foot-4, 275 pounds. He's easy to find, but great players can still affect the game even if they're doubled."
Garrett's performance and the defense's overall ability to pressure the quarterback will be key in maintaining momentum. The Browns' defense has shown flashes of dominance this season but has struggled to sustain that away from Cleveland. LB Carson Schwesinger stressed the importance of playing with intensity from start to finish with the Browns looking for their first away win.
"I think for us, it's just a matter of making sure that every week we go out there and play the type of football that we know we're able to play and doing it for all four quarters," Schwesinger said. "I think really that's the main emphasis is we can't play two good quarters and then one alright quarter, it has to be four great quarters of football."
