Oklahoma to honor Baker Mayfield with statue

The University of Oklahoma will publicly unveil its statue honoring Baker Mayfield next month.

Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said Monday the program will put a little bit of a different twist on the unveiling. The statue will be first revealed inside Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium before the start of the team's April 18 spring game.

"That will be a part of the game," Riley said. "Instead of a ceremony outside the stadium, why not include all 50, 60, 70,000 whatever is there, why not include all of them in that moment. It's going to be a pretty cool, historic moment for the program."

Oklahoma has statues for all of its Heisman trophy winners in its Heisman Park, and plans are in the works to honor Kyler Murray, who won the Heisman Trophy one year after Mayfield, in similar fashion. Mayfield was the sixth Heisman winner, following Billy Vessels, Steve Owens, Billy Sims, Jason White and Sam Bradford.

Mayfield finished his decorated Oklahoma career ranked second in FBS history in passing efficiency rating (175.4), third in yards per attempt (9.7), tied for fourth in touchdown passes (131), fifth in total offense (15,690 yards) and seventh in passing yards (14,607).
