The Browns have named Todd Monken the team's 19th full-time head coach.

Monken, 59, returns to Cleveland for his second stint with the organization after he was the offensive coordinator for the Browns in 2019.

Over the course of his coaching career, Monken has developed a strong offensive record both with collegiate programs and the NFL – including multiple top 10 scoring seasons, a historic Ravens' offensive unit in 2024 and his role in running Georgia's offense during its national title run.

"We are very excited to name Todd Monken the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns," Managing and Principal Partners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a statement. "Todd is highly intelligent, and his experienced, innovative offensive mindset has been at the forefront of constructing productive and successful offenses at the NFL and collegiate level over the last 20 years. He is an outstanding leader and has a clear vision to lead our team as a strong communicator who values trust with his players but also accountability and preparation. In our committee's exhaustive reference work on Todd, his commitment to player development was evident, and his tough and straightforward coaching is respected by the players and the coaches he's worked with, putting our team in a position to succeed while developing our players to maximize their talents. We welcome Todd, Terri, and the rest of the Monken family back to the Browns and look forward to him establishing the winning culture that will lead our team to the success our fans so deserve."

This is Monken's first NFL head coach position in his 11 years in the league.

He previously was the Ravens offensive coordinator for three seasons after he joined the coaching staff in 2023. In his first season as the offensive play-caller, QB Lamar Jackson was named NFL MVP for the second time in his career. Then in Monken's second season, the Ravens finished with the No. 1 offense in the NFL for the first time in team history.

For those three seasons, the Ravens' offense sits in the top five across the league in a number of categories. They rank first in rushing yards with 8,512 yards – including 166.9 yards per game – second in scrimmage yards with 19,860 and third in points per game with 27.9. Baltimore also is third with 70 rushing touchdowns and fifth with 91 receiving touchdowns.

During Monken's time with the Ravens, RB Derrick Henry led all NFL players with 4,683 rushing yards and 44 rushing touchdowns from 2023-25. He also led all NFL players with 104 rushes of 10+ yards from 2023-25.

Monken brings 37 seasons of coaching experience, including 11 in the NFL. He spent seven seasons as an NFL offensive coordinator, including one season with the Browns in 2019, and another four as a wide receivers coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2007-10.

"Todd has a varied and diverse background that we found as a particularly appealing match for our team at this stage in its life cycle," Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Andrew Berry said in a statement. "He has a direct, demanding, and detail-oriented leadership style that will create a great incubator for a young team. His successful offensive track record at both the pro and college level with a variety of offensive systems and QB skill sets will allow maximum flexibility as we make several, long-term investments on that side of the ball. The lessons he learned from John Harbaugh and Kirby Smart as well as his demonstrated track record turning around Southern Miss have shown us that he has a full understanding of what the position requires and the capacity to execute. We cannot wait to get started and we welcome Todd, Terri and Travis to Cleveland."

Monken was the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2016-18. His offense rewrote Tampa Bay's record book, as the Buccaneers led the NFL with 14,130 total passing yards for those three seasons. His offenses ranked fifth (346.4 in 2016), fourth (363.5 in 2017) and first (415.5 in 2018) in Buccaneers' history in yards per game. The 2018 Buccaneers also set numerous club records, including total yards (6,648), total touchdowns (49), passing yards (5,125), passing touchdowns (36), first downs (388) and points (396). WR Mike Evans thrived under Monken as he earned his first two Pro Bowl selections and topped 1,000 receiving yards in all three seasons.

While in Cleveland, Monken led a Browns' offense that featured RB Nick Chubb, who produced the league's second-most rushing yards at 1,494 and recorded eight touchdowns. QB Baker Mayfield also threw a then single-season career-high 3,827 passing yards — adding 22 touchdowns — while WRs Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. each recorded a 1,000-yard season.

Todd Monken brings 37 seasons of coaching experience, including 11 in the NFL. He spent seven seasons as an NFL offensive coordinator and 26 years coaching at the collegiate level in a variety of roles, including serving as the head coach of Southern Miss from 2013-15 and the offensive coordinator at the University of Georgia from 2020-22.

He also spent 26 years coaching at the collegiate level in a variety of roles, including serving as the head coach of Southern Miss from 2013-15 and the offensive coordinator at the University of Georgia from 2020-22.

In 2013, Monken took over a Southern Miss program that had finished 0-12 the previous season. By the end of his third campaign in 2015, the Golden Eagles had posted a 9-5 record, won the Conference USA West division and earned an appearance in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Then during his tenure as offensive coordinator at Georgia, he helped produce back-to-back national championship seasons in 2021 and 2022.

Monken began his coaching career at Grand Valley State, spending two seasons as a graduate assistant (1989-90), before holding the same title at Notre Dame (1991-92). He also coached at Eastern Michigan, where he worked as the defensive backs/wide receivers coach (1993-97), before being elevated to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach (1998-99). Monken also served as the running backs coach (2000) and the wide receivers coach (2001) at Louisiana Tech.

He did two stints at Oklahoma State, first as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach from 2002-04, and then as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2011-12. During his time as offensive coordinator, the team set school season records for total offensive yards, passing yards, completion percentage, points scored and passing touchdowns. He worked with QB Brandon Weeden and WR Justin Blackmon, who both went on to be first-round picks in the 2012 NFL Draft. Before entering the NFL, Monken served as the passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach at LSU from 2005-06, when he helped develop future first-round selections WR Dwayne Bowe and WR Buster Davis.
