The Browns are interviewing Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase on Friday for the team's head coach opening.
Scheelhaase is one of two candidates to interview on Friday. Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz interviewed on Jan. 8, while Bengals offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher and Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde interviewed on Jan. 9. Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken then interviewed on Jan. 10 while former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel interviewed on Jan. 12.
Scheelhaase first joined the Rams as an offensive assistant and pass game specialist in 2024. That season, he guided a passing attack that ranked 10th with 3,868 passing yards and 227.5 passing yards per game, 12th with 11.2 yards per reception and 13th with 367 completions.
He was then promoted to pass game coordinator for the 2025 season. The Rams ranked first in the league with 4,557 passing yards and averaged 268.1 passing yards per game.
He joined the Rams after spending six seasons on the Iowa State football staff serving in various roles from 2018 to 2023. In 2022, he served as the Cyclone's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Scheelhaase also spent two years coaching the running backs and wide receivers and took on run game coordinator responsibilities from 2021-22. Before splitting duties for the program, he coached the receivers for two seasons from 2019-20 and the running backs for one season in 2018.
During his tenure at Iowa State, the Cyclones appeared in five bowl games and began the season in the AP Top 25 in four of his six seasons with the program. The Cyclones also finished with a winning record in five of six seasons and the program produced three of the most productive offenses in school history since 2019.
Prior to his time at Iowa State, Scheelhaase was on staff at his alma mater, the University of Illinois, from 2015-17. He spent his first season as the running backs coach in 2015 before becoming an offensive analyst, a role he held from 2016-17.
Scheelhaase played quarterback for the Fighting Illini from 2009-13 and finished his career as the program's all-time leader in total offense with 10,634 yards – which ranks seventh in Big Ten history. He was the only quarterback in Illini history to win back-to-back bowl games and is one of just two players in Big Ten history to total over 8,000 passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards during his collegiate career.
