Storylines to Watch

  • How QB Shedeur Sanders leads offense in second start — After leading the Browns to a 24-10 victory over the Raiders in his first NFL start in Week 12, Sanders was named the starting quarterback for Week 13 against the 49ers. It will also be his first regular-season start in front of a home crowd at Huntington Bank Field. Sanders will have another opportunity to illustrate his command of the offense and help move the Browns down the field into scoring position. In Week 12, the Browns had four scoring drives, including a 66-yard pass to RB Dylan Sampson who ran the ball into the end zone for a touchdown. The 49ers give up an average of 241.8 passing yards per game this season, ranked 26th in the league, which creates an opportunity for Sanders and the Browns' offense to rely on the pass game to find success.
  • How the Browns contain RB Christian McCaffery — The Browns' defense not only will have account for RB Christian McCaffrey in the run game, but also in the pass game. He leads the 49ers in both rushing and receiving yards this season, with 796 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 217 carries, and 785 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 81 receptions. His versatility allows San Francisco to line up McCaffrey in the backfield or the slot to use him as a receiver. The Browns will need all three levels of the defense to contain McCaffrey and adjust to the different ways they utilize him in the offense.
  • How the Browns limit the pass game — McCaffrey is not the only threat in the pass game, as the Browns must account for how QB Brock Purdy can connect with multiple pass catchers, including WR Jauan Jennings, TE George Kittle and WR Ricky Pearsall. The 49ers rank third in the NFL with 249.4 passing yards per game, moving the ball through the air to put their offense in position to score. In his four games this season, Purdy has completed 90 of 131 passes for 979 passing yards and eight touchdowns. He has also thrown seven interceptions and taken three sacks. With pressure from the Browns' defensive line — coming off a game in which they totaled 10 sacks — as well as coverage in the secondary, the Browns could limit the success of the 49ers in the pass game.
