Browns rookie LB Carson Schwesinger has been named the 2025 recipient of the Maurice Bassett Award.

The award was originally created in 1985 in honor of RB Maurice Bassett – who played for the Browns from 1954-56 – and is given to the Browns' most outstanding rookie in training camp, as voted by the media.

"I'm very impressed with him on a daily basis," head coach Kevin Stefanski said on Aug. 21. "Both the plays he makes on the field, what he's able to do in the building. Making those calls is no small feat for young players, and I think the veterans on this team recognize and respect that he knows it. They respect that he puts in the work, and he does make plays out here on the practice field they hope translate to the game."

Schwesinger has excelled throughout training camp and the preseason, making an early impact on the defensive side of the ball. In the first preseason game against the Panthers, Schwesinger led the team with six tackles. He then recorded one quarterback hit in the final preseason game against the Rams.

Since Schwesinger arrived at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus in the spring following the draft, linebackers coach Jason Tarver has seen how Schwesinger handles one-time fixes to correct a mistake and apply the correction the next time. That work has translated into practices with how he has applied pressure to the quarterbacks, stopped the run game and made other defensive plays, including a "sack" during the first joint practices with the Eagles.

"Carson's been really a guy as advertised, where he's come in and he's running the show, he's making plays," Stefanski said on Aug. 24. "I think his athleticism, his length shows up in practice and these games. So, he's doing in games what I'm seeing him do in practice as well."

The Browns drafted Schwesinger with the 33rd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. After redshirting as a walk-on in 2021, Schwesinger played three seasons for UCLA and appeared in 38 career games. He recorded 163 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, five sacks, two interceptions, three passes defensed and one forced fumble.
